FL state Rep. Randolph Condemns Republican Unemployment Compensation Bill

TALLAHASSEE – Representative Scott Randolph (D-Orlando), Democratic ranking member on the House Finance and Tax Committee, offered the following statement:

It is clear to me that the goal of the Unemployment Compensation Bill is to punish unemployed Floridians during a period of considerable economic turmoil and low job opportunity.i

I cannot understand why this legislature is so intent on making it increasingly difficult for these same Floridians to find jobs. Just yesterday, the Governor rejected funding for the high-speed rail project, which would have created thousands of jobs in our state. Instead of focusing on job creation, the governor and the Republican-led Legislature appears more interested in punishing out-of-work Floridians for their own failure to stimulate job growth.

Apparently this legislature won’t be satisfied until it has forced unemployed Floridians out of their homes, onto food stamps and into Medicaid, with no job prospects in the near future. For the good of our state, we should not allow this bill to become law.”

Nice words, but there are no checks and balances in Florida government. The Republicans control both legislative branches and the governor's mansion.

The GOP wants to cut unemployment compensation to 20 weeks and also make it easier for employers to dispute claims.

Undoubtedly this will push many Florida families onto welfare: food stamps and  Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Rick Scott even rejected an extension from the federal government to pay back federal loans used to extend unemployment benefits. Clearly Scott is trying to solve Florida's problems with a "lone wolf' strategy that is bound to backfire.

Meanwhile Florida Republicans, who have run the state for 12+ years are blaming the economic downturn on Obama and the federal government. They got away with that in the last election, but that line won't work in the next.

Scott appears to have a histrionic personality, and like Donald Trump fancies himself as presidential timber. It would not surprise Rightardia if Scott tries to run for president in 2012 after barely winning the Florida governor's election!
