Freepers going down for the three count?

As everyone knows, one of the dumbest, most violent, most hate-filled sites on the web is the FreeRepublic or Freepers for short.

The FreeRepublic site is a discussion forum filled with members who seem to live in another universe. Reality is in short supply.

Run by James C. Robinson and John Robinson, the Freepers are certifiable nutcases. Their "discussions" are filled with violent, obscene, unthinking, untrue, illogical spew.

For the past 2-3 weeks, the site has been up and down. Now it seems as though this may be a serious problem, maybe even terminal.

The Robinsons claim they need a pile of money to keep the Freepers going.

Bottom line is that the founder, Jim Robinson appears to be a grifter who has been fleecing the nutcases who donate to him.

In today's discussions, Robinson said:

As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter.

Hmm. "couple of thousand donations per quarter averaging $30 bucks each." That's $60,000 revenue per quarter or $240,000 revenue per year.

And he's having problems keeping the place running? Let's dig a bit deeper.

The Freeper's Alexa rank is about 4300 compared to about 3600 for DailyKos. Kos runs their site with one (large) server handling their traffic for a LOT less money.

Robinson says he's having "database problems." This happens on forum sites.

For example, VBulletin software had a problem when the site became too large -- backups were not effectively done and too many problems creeped into the site .

Eventually, one site had to shut everything down, and start all over again. All previous posts were put into an archive site and no changes were allowed.

Freepers seems to be built on custom software, it looks like its problems are even worse.

Freepers has also been sued for copyright violation. A liberal legal firm Righthaven bought up copyrights from newspapers and  has been suing conservative web sites.

It sued Matt Drudge as well for using a TSA photo posted in the Denver Post

Free Republic LLC has also been sued in federal court in Las Vegas.

Court records indicate users of that website this year posted numerous Las Vegas Review -Journal (R-J) stories, columns and editorials, with the R-J being credited as the source of the information.

These postings amount to copyright infringement, charges the lawsuit filed by Righthaven LLC, which has partnered with the Review-Journal to sue website operators around the country.

The suit seeks damages of $75,000. Calling itself "The Premier Conservative Site on the Net," the Free Republic site includes links to numerous newspapers.
