I wouldn't think this is anything to be terribly excited about. I read years ago that the Chinese were developing the "XXJ"; a 5th generation fighter which was to be stealthy, etc, and it was noted that if they did it successfully, they'd be the first country ever to make a "generational leap" in aircraft technology, since they had had no indigenously designed 4th generation fighters. I would doubt that their new aircraft would be comparable to Russia's new aircraft, or the US F-22 Raptor, although that proved too expensive and the Pentagon cancelled further purchases, prompting Lockheed-Martin to nearly double the asking price for their F-35 jet on the grounds that if the Pentagon wasn't buying the Raptor, they couldn't afford to sell the F-35 at the original price. Nice when you have the kind of friends that allow you to get away with that sort of thing, I guess. How would you feel if you went to a department store and were told the socks were double price because you weren't also buying shoes?
Rightardia actually was covering this aircraft a couple of days before the national media ran it when SECDEF Gates saw the aircraft when he visited china.
The Russians had a picture of the aircraft in RT or Ria Novosti and then ran an article about it. it is a knock off of a Russian prototype and the Chinese airframe is identical to a Mig prototype.
