Workers Independent News: Employers shifting health care burden to workers at accelerated rate

Submitted by Jesse Russell on September 5, 2010 - 4:49pm
A new report by Kaiser Family Foundation has found employers shifting health care costs to workers at an accelerated rate. The report says workers paid 30 percent of the premiums for family coverage and 19 percent for single coverage.

That’s the highest rate in 12 years. Worker contributions increased this year by 13.7 and employer contributions fell by .9 percent.

A big question is what employee benefits are companies now providing? Only 21 per cent of Americans go into retirement with a pension and many of those are provided by government, not private industry.

Many employers tout the the 401ks as pensions, but this program was created as an employee savings plan, not as an  employer pension plan. Now employers are shifting the cost of medical insurance to employees, too.

In most small businesses, the employee pay 100 per cent of the health insurance cost.
