Russia is ready to launch Iran's first nuclear power plant on Saturday, saying the joint project will show that Tehran is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Russian-built reactor will be loaded with fuel under the strict control of the UN's nuclear watchdog IAEA.

The plant is expected to be fully operational in about a month. Russia will run the facility, supply the fuel and take away the waste, which eases some fears that Tehran could use the reactor to make nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency will fully control the management of Bushehr nuclear power plant which rules out the possibility of any manipulation with the spent nuclear fuel, Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

The Bushehr project is unique as it strictly observes the regimen of nuclear non-proliferation,” the ministry said. “Over the work of the plant, the fuel will be supplied by Russia on the condition that it is returned in future, and all the working and fuel related processes will be controlled fully by the IAEA, which rules out completely any manipulations with used fuel.

According to former CIA officer Philip Giraldi, despite the fears of the West, Iran at this point is not anywhere near to developing nuclear weapons.

I believe the evidence right now is that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons,” he said. “It seems to be the consensus of the CIA and other intelligence agencies in the United States. Whether they ever will develop nuclear weapons is, of course, another question and probably, the more threats they get from the United Sates and Israel, the more likely they will be to do so.
