Argumentum ad hominem and ad populum

Rachel Maddow explains  argumentum ad hominem and ad populum.

The right wing is notorious for ad hominem attacks. Patriot Games provides many examples of this on alt.politics Usenet conference and his miscreant web site that provides 'the truth' and lists Democratic posters he doesn't' agree with.

He considers all of these Democrats to be 'liars' which indicates how close minded he is.

Ad hominem and ad populum attacks sidestep the real issues.  Let's not have discussion on the issue. It's easier to flame the poster or say the argument defies 'common sense.'

Of course, 'common sense' is an abstract term that means different things to different people. A friend of Rightard Whitey  once said is that Americans need more 'uncommon sense' rather than 'common sense." Rightardia agrees.

The ad populum 'plain folks' attacks are also common. This is is the basis of Nixon's 'silent majority' which the Republicans knew they did not have during the Nixon era. The so-called family values campaign of the GOP is also ad populum.

The GOP also tried an ad populum approach with Proposition 8 in California but found out that you cannot vote human rights away.

Would Democrats ever use an ad hominem attack? Perhaps. Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann come to mind.
