Oklahoma's central labor federation will hold the first-ever Oklahoma Labor Fest August 26th-28th in Oklahoma City. Tim O’Connor is President of the Central Oklahoma Labor federation.
O’Connor: “Our state motto is ‘Labor Omnia Vincit’, which is Latin for ‘Labor Conquers All.’ So that should tell you something about how we originated. One of our founding fathers for our state constitution was a organizer with the miners.”
O’Connor says the labor festival will try to create a greater awareness of unions, the state’s labor history and working class culture.
O’Connor: “It’s really to just bring some attention to some of Oklahoma’s labor history and just to try to change a state mind on unions. We have a low density of unions and it’s an attempt to try to educate the public on some of the rich labor history that we have.”
O’Connor says Oklahoma residents have been fighting for workers’ rights since the beginning of statehood there. The August Labor fest will feature music, poetry readings and will culminate in a dramatic performance on the state’s labor and civil rights history called “Oklahoma Speaks”.
