Rightrdia has mentioned that many scientists think race is an artificial concept. The first humans were black and all of the other races are related to the ancestral blacks.
European colonists and Southern slavers used race to keep the people they brought form Africa to the US in their place.
The miscegenation laws passed in the South prevented white indentured servants females from marrying black males. This is the basic cause of racism in the US.
