Newsy: US must reduce defense spending
The US needs to reduce defense spending. Even Defense Secretary Gates has stated that one US Navy Carrier Task Force has more people in it than the entire US state department. We need more highly trained diplomats and fewer soldiers and marines.
Our weapons systems are over-engineered and it would be difficult to produce them in the quantities needed to win the next world war.
During world War 2, the Germans had the best tanks, jet aircraft, and new toechnology, but they were defeated by the allies that greatly outproduced them. It took four Sherman M4 tanks to defeat a German Tiger tank, but we got the job done because the US had lots of less sophisticated tanks.
Technology doesn't win wars, people do.
What is the strategic value of Afghanistan or belligerent allies like Israel? Nobody ever asked us to police the world. That is the job of the UN.
Newsy thinks Ron Paul is an unlikely ally, but libertarians believe that US should defend its bonders and not try to maintain international hegemony. Paul's views on national defense are consistent with libertarian principals.
Obama is trying to too hard to be centrist. He should have froze defense spending after he got into office.
