After repeorts of oil waves in the Gulf of Mexico that are up to 10 feet high, many enterprising fishermman started to harvest the crude oil to sell it to other oil companies. Other locals have used back yard stills to make fuel oil and diesel fuel.

BP advised the Obama administration that people in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida were stealing BP oil. When the Obama administration refused to intervene during  the oil pilfering. BP started hiring locals to guard the beaches to make sure  the BP oil was being removed from the gulf only by authorized persons.

Rick Scott, who is running for Florida governor, claimed that most of people who were stealing the oil were illegal immigrants and that Florida needed a law like the one in Arizona to protect private property.

The Republican party of Florida also condemned the looting of the oil as an assault against private property. BP said its guards would exercise their Second Amendment rights to protect its oil from thieves.
