WSJ: Thunderbird email client review

Rightardia has been using Thunderbird for years and loves it. It is an email client that is comparable to Outlook Express. The latest Windows email client is called Windows Live Mail. We cannot compare this product to Thunderbird because we are a Ubuntu Linux shop and don't use Live Mail.

Thunderbird works with Exchange server, but Exchange server has so many features such as a scheduler, calendar, web based email and global address list, it would probably make more sense to use the Outlook client which is far more robust than Thunderbird. However, Outlook Express is not compatible with Exchange server.

If you want to avoid the expense of purchasing Outlook as an email client, here are instructions for using Thunderbird with Exchange server: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/03/30/howto-thunderbird-and-ms-exchange-server/

Back in the days when Rightardia used Windows, we discovered that unless Microsoft Word was installed, Outlook Express could not spell check emails. This is why we installed Thunderbird which was superior to Outlook Express in other ways as well. Thunderbird could automatically create Gmail accounts without a lot of extra steps. It was also a faster email client.

We think Walt Mossberg may be comparing apples to oranges.  As far as POP or IMAP email client, Thunderbird 3.04 is hard to beat. As far as an Exchange server client. Outlook is hard to beat, but Thunderbird can do the job if you want to save some tech bucks.
