Senate Votes To Move Forward To Extend Unemployment Benefits - 04/13/10

Submitted by Doug Cunningham on April 13, 2010 - 6:26am

The U.S. Senate voted to keep unemployment benefits flowing on Monday. Four Republicans voted with Democrats to move forward with the extension.

More action is needed before the measure is final, but Democratic leaders say they hope to get it done this week. The Senate’s action will extend both unemployment benefits and subsidies for the COBRA health insurance for unemployed workers.

The four Republicans voting with Democrats to extend the benefits are: Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and George Voinovich of Ohio.

Rightardia applauds the four Republicans who supported the extension of unemployment benefits.  Unemployment is a bread and butter issue for more than 10 per cent of the US workforce. Unemployment benefits are also a moral issue.

Moody's Economy has also pointed that unemployment benefits go directly back into the economy and provide a bigger bang for the federal tax bucks. Unemployment insurance is more effective use of tax dollars than temporary or permanent tax cuts.
