Sen. Shelby tries to blackmail Obama's Nominees Over Earmarks

Submitted by Jesse Russell on February 7, 2010 - 11:11am

Alabama Republican Senator Richard Shelby is threatening to “blanket hold” President Barack Obama’s presidential nominations unless an earmark that would award a $35 billion contract defense contract to a French aerospace company is reestablished.

The earmark would result in providing an advantage to Airbus over U.S. based Boeing in the bidding process. While it would create thousands of jobs in Shelby’s home state it would also award billions of dollars to a company that was recently cited by the World Trade Organization for receiving illegal subsidies from European countries that gave Airbus an unfair advantage over Boeing.

Shelby has also received a substantial amount of money from Airbus and Northrup Grumman, both of which formed a consortium to develop the fuel tanker. According to the Center for Public Integrity since 1986 Shelby has benefited to the sum of more than $108,000 thanks to Northrop Grumman.

Rightardia comment: Shelby is trying to blackmail the government while concurrently screwing a US corporation. This is after all of that GOP rhetoric about earmarks.  Shame on Senator Shelby.
