Tata Wants to Sell the Nano in the U.S. in Two Years, Would You Buy One?
With the Indian version of the Tata Nano finally set to go on sale in July and the European version slated for 2011, Tata Chairman Ratan Tata is getting ambitious, telling reporters this week that he hopes to have the car on sale in the U.S. within two years.
"It will need to meet all emission and crash standards and so we hope in the next two years we will be offering such a vehicle in the U.S.," Ratan Tata told a panel at the Cornell Global Forum on Sustainable Global Enterprise on Wednesday.
The Nano, billed as the world's cheapest car at about $2300, has been plagued by delays due to disputes surrounding its production site. The Nano was originally designed as a safer form of transportation for India's poor and already has over 200,000 orders in its home market.
In fact, there have been so many orders that Tata has been forced to implement a lottery system to determine who will get the first run of 100,000 cars.
Do you think the Tata Nano will ever actually be offered in the U.S.? Only if it can meet US stringent US crash and emission standards. Could this be the new Model T?
