Meet Jim Picccillo: candidate for Florida's 5th Congressional District
Jim Piccillo is a father, veteran, small business consultant and fiscally responsible Democrat committed to bringing common-sense back to Florida’s 5th Congressional District. Piccillo is running against the incumbent Ginny Brown-Waite, Republican fossil from the Pleistocene.
Piccillo was raised by a strong single mother in New York State for much of his childhood. He went on to study Business Administration at Hawaii Pacific University, and earned his M.B.A. at Canisius College. Piccillo has lived in Florida since 2003, where he remains an active member of the community and the proud father of two beautiful daughters ages 9 and 5.
Piccillo served six years on active duty with the United States Army, including several years with the prestigious 101st Airborne Division. During his service, Jim received several awards and medals, including an Army Achievement Medal "for meritorious achievement in support of the contingency mission resulting from the September 11th attacks."
After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Jim moved to Florida, where he began working in finance as an auditor at HSBC. Piccillo has 10 years of small business consultant experience and, today, works as a real estate negotiator.
In addition to his military and business career, Piccillo is an active community leader. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Charlie and Katrina, he organized two statewide food drives which netted over 20 tons of food and $10,000 for community food pantries. He also helped organize two major donation drives for Pasco County's Sunrise Center, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and assault.
Having served his country with honor and distinction, Jim feels the call to serve on an even greater level by representing Central Florida in Congress. He wants to bring common sense back to Congress; help create jobs for out-of-work families; protect Social Security and Medicare for our seniors, and fulfill the commitment our country makes to veterans for their service and sacrifice.
Rightardia comment on Ginny Brown-Waite: She has called Social Security system as a "Ponzi scheme" although her district has a high concentration of retirees.
An ardent opponent of gun control, Brown-Waite is known for proudly carrying a gun when she is home living in the 5th district.
She proposed the American Heroes Repatriation Act, to move American soldiers buried in France and Belgium back to the United States, in the process angering French officials and constituents. This was probably a continuation of the ridiculous 'freedom fries' tempest in a teapot in the US House cafeteria.
She also caused a minor controversy when, commenting on the economic-stimulus package proposed by President Bush in early 2008, she referred to the peoples of Puerto Rico and Guam as "foreign citizens. She tried to block funds to both dominions.
In September 2006, Brown-Waite was told about an incident from 2003 or 2004 when an apparently inebriated Mark Foley had tried to gain access to the pages' dormitory. On September 28, 2006, an inappropriate e-mail that Foley sent was posted on ABCNEWS.com's "The Blotter".
Brown-Waite launched her own investigation and alerted Republican leadership on September 29 both about the dorm incident and about pages who had been made to feel uncomfortable by Foley. Foley resigned that day and the scandal erupted that evening with news of the lurid instant messages he had sent former pages.
