First they came

"First they came ..." is a popular poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Although the precise origin of the poem is not known, Niemöller stated he prefers the version as:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Laura Ingraham of Fox News came up with this version while protesting the Senate healthcare bill at a rally in DC.

“First they came for the rich. And I did not speak out because I was not rich. Then they came for the property owners, and I did not speak out because I did not own property. Then they came for the right to bear arms, and I did not speak out because I was not armed. Then they came for me and denied me my medical care, and there was no one left to speak for me."

Comparing a health care bill to the Nazi era is hypocritical because the Republicans have more in common with the Nazis than the Democrats. The Nazis did not come for the rich, the property owners or the gun owners. They came for political opponents, union members and Jews and put them into concentration camps. The only people who could not own guns in Germany prior to the war were the Jews. This is clearly right wing propaganda of the worst sort.
