Up to 100,000 people took part in the largely peaceful protest, organizers said, though police estimated the number at closer to 10,000 when the march got under way.
Smaller solidarity demonstrations were held in Greece, Spain, Germany and other countries. Former Danish supermodel Helena Christensen appealed to US President Barack Obama to lead a far-reaching pact when he comes to the UN climate summit at the end of next week. "The United States must recognize the huge influence they have over what can happen in climate protection," she told the rally in the Danish capital.
Environment ministers, heads of government and other representatives of 191 states are due in Copenhagen next week to sign a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol on limiting greenhouse gases. "How long do the heads of state want to sit back and watch how people are dying where we are because of climate change," said singer Angelique Kidjou from the West Africa nation of Benin.
Danish police arrested 19 people at the beginning of the protest march, which drew climate activists from around the world. By early evening the number had risen to around 300, according to media reports, as police sought to isolate potential troublemakers from the main group of protesters.
Police said the rowdies were "detained temporarily" after stones and fireworks were thrown at the officers. Others were held for having weapons and being in possession of drugs. However, there were no major disturbances, police said.
