Workers Independent News: Wisconsin Makes Labor History Education Mandatory |

Rightardia comment: If more young people knew about the early 20th Century child labor laws, The Pullman Strike, the Homestead Strike and some of the other bloody events that suppressed unions, they would be less likely to vote for Republicans.

In general, Americans have a limited underastandings of US history and civics. Watch a couple of episodes of Jay Leno's Jay Walking and you will understand.  Even college students do poorly on basic questions about US history.

The state of Wisconsin is one of the first states in the country to make the teaching of labor history a mandatory part of public education. Wisconsin AFL-CIO President David Newby said it makes sense because Wisconsin has always been at the forefront of fighting for the rights of working people.

Newby: “Wisconsin has been a leader in the worker’s campaign for an eight-hour day starting way back in the 1880's, in establishing the public education system, the first worker’s compensation system in the country, one of the first family and medical leave acts back in the late 80s, been a leader in trying to get health care for all…”

Newby said history is often made not by leaders and captains of industry, but by people and teaching labor history in school will help make sure that story isn’t overlooked.

Newby: “Too often history is taught in terms of who are the great leaders. The real history below the surface is being created by working people…”
