Is Italy slipping into fascism?

Italy was the only Western European democracy to slip into the “partly free” category in the global press freedom index. It now ranks 73rd out of 195 countries worldwide, between Benin and Tonga.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s media empire controls several television channels, newspapers and radio stations. It has censured information about Berlusconi's numerous affairs with women including an underage lingerie model and prostitutes.

Marco Travaglio, an investigative reporter produced a televised documentary shown that revealed Berlusconi's indiscretions. Travaglio was able overcome a contractual standoff with bosses at the state broadcaster, Rai Due. He told the 5.6 million viewers that the truth was being kept from them.

Patrizia D’Addario was paid to have sex with Berlusconi

Patrizia D’Addario, the escort girl whose story has rocked his premiership, finally made her first appearance on Italian television. She was paid by an associate of Berlusconi who functioned as the prime minister's pimp. This story has been out for months, but withheld from the Italian media that Berlusconi controls. Berlusconi's wife is also divorcing him.
