Jeremy Bird, the Organizing for America (OFA) Deputy Director, opened the conference call. He said both Mitch Stewart,Executive Director of Organizing for America, and and David Axelrod.Senior Advisor to the Presidnet, would talk about America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.
One of the community organizers, Sarah, from Westerville,OH talked about her family's experiences with health care. Her husband lost his health insurance and all their family could afford is catastrophic coverage that doesn't pay until a $5,000 deductible is met. Her daughter, who is in school, just turned 22 and and was no longer covered by the family's insurance. Sarah got a notice that her daughter could get a affiliate policy, but the insurance company wanted $760/month to cover a 22 year old woman.
David Axelrod indicated the America's Affordable Health Choices Act would drop upper and lifetime caps on insurance. He also said that health care premiums went up 200 per cent in the last decade. Insurance premiums have increased three times the rate of the wages. Axelrod also indicated that only one third of small businesses have insurance. He indicated the president's health care plan would keep children under the family insurance plan until age 26.
The president's senior advisor also emphasized the importance of of preventive care, wellness and chronic disease management.
Another person from Ohio, Candace, called and said she wanted a real debate that can be heard in America. Axelrod mentioned how much he enjoyed getting out of the Washington echo chamber and attending the president's town hall meeting in New Hampshire today. "It's a breath of fresh air to make America a better country, " said Axlerod.
Axelrod also mentioned the two town hall meetings of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill. Rightardia watched part of the meeting which was interrupted numerous times by rude Astroturfers who told McCaskill 'they didn't trust her [on health care.].'
Bethany from Indiana also called in and asked how the health care law would impact young voters. Axelrod pointed out that the emergency room was often the only option that many had since many think young people they are indestructible.
One of the most interesting testimonies of the night was Jack, a community organizer, form Alhambra, CA. He attended a town meeting of Adam Shiff, a Blue Dog Democratic Congressman, who stands with the president on health care, today. He said doctors, nurses, vets and union members attended.
He also explained how his father from Italy could only get a job cleaning floors after he immigrated. His father went to school and 17 years later he was the senior psychiatrist in the same hospital. His father developed brain cancer that his insurance company refused to cover.
His father had to pay $23,000 a month for chemo-therapy to extend his life for several months, but wanted some money left over to send his son, Jack, to school. So his father stopped the chem treatments. Seventeen days later after stopping chemo, his father was dead. Jack indicated we have the opportunity to save lives if we reform health care.
