Dick Armey calls Medicare "tyranny"

August 16, 2009

Rightardia comment: Medicare is payroll tax that some observers have called a forced savings plan. It is borne by the working not the seniors who benefit from Medicare when they reach age 65.

The Armey argument has also been used on Social Security. Why not let people opt out? This would weaken both programs and many people who would opt out would be left with nothing.

Let's face up to the fact that a lot of the people who are Astroturfers, Birthers, Deathers and Tea Baggers aren't the brighest lights. These people will end up on welfare if left to their own devices.

Medicare and Social Security are two programs that we are all in together. Taxes have never been negotiable in any viable modern society. Nor are taxes tyranny. Taxes are essential to a fair and just society.

While seniors across the country are worried about cuts to Medicare under health care reform, Dick Armey thinks that the popular program is "tyranny."

The former House Republican majority leader and current chairman of conservative group Freedom Works characterized Medicare as such on NBC's "Meet the Press" because seniors are forced to participate.

"Why do they not let people who don't want to be in, out?" Armey asked Sunday, highlighting the cost of the program to the federal government.

"This is important...The anti-health care reform lobby thinks that Medicare is tyranny," said an incredulous Rachel Maddow, the NBC weekday host who was seated next to Armey on the panel.
