Internal RNC Memo: "Engage In Every Activity" To Slow Down Health Care Reform

First Posted: 07-21-09 11:05 AM Updated: 07-21-09 11:27

The memo, which was obtained by the Huffington Post from a Democratic source, provides the clearest illustration to date of the political playbook being used to stop Democratic attempts at a health care overhaul.

Much of the material mirrors the speeches and presentations made by conservatives both inside and out of elected office to date. Obama's plan for health care is deemed an "experiment" and a "risk" that could bankrupt the country and dangerously change the doctor-patient relationship.

In particular, the 12-page memo makes the case that it is a Republican priority to slow down health care reform before it can become codified.

"The Republican National Committee will engage in every activity we can to slow down this mad rush while promoting sensible alternatives that address health care costs and preserve quality," the memo affirmatively declares.

Nancy Pelosi should be able to move the health care bill though Congress because of the rules oriented nature of the House. Undoubtedly conservative representatives will try to introduce bogus amendments and and read them publicly to slows things down. Pelosi should be able to get this under control.

Filibusters in the Senate are even more likely and 60 Senators have to vote for cloture to stop a filibuster. The Democratic senators can 'fast track' a bill by using so-called budget reconciliation that will make possible passage of the most ambitious overhaul of the nation's healthcare system in generations. Only a simple majority will be needed to pass the bill. However, the new law will come up for review in six years when a budget reconciliation is used.

The Republicans will claim that a budget reconciliation isn't fair play but it was used during the Bush administration innumerable times: See http://thinkprogress.org/2009/03/24/budget-reconciliation/

Harry Reid should think about Sherman's March to the Sea in which he broke the back of the Confederacy and shelled Atlanta. "I can make . . . Georgia howl!" promised William Tecumseh Sherman. It's time for some serous Democratic whupass!

Ed Schultz of the MSNBC Ed Show suggested the president keep the House and Senate in session until they pass health care legislation. This would probably reduce a lot of the GOP foot dragging and also stop Blue Dog Democrats from taking a 'go slow' approach, too.

The Democrats will need the services of the meanest and nastiest Democrats like Rahm Emanuel, and a 'take no prisoners' approach to 'get 'er done' that would make Larry the Cable Guy proud. President Obama needs to become a Ninja warrior and slay Republicans whenever necessary. His first mark should be Senator Jim DeMint.
