Federal judge is impeached by the House

Samuel B. Kent, a judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas was impeached today by Congress after he refused to resign after being convicted for the assault of two female employees.

He will now be tried in the Senate. He refused to resign because he would lose his $174,000 salary.

He was nominated to the bench by George H.W. Bush in 1990. The impeachment legislation was introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) on June 9, 2009.

Samuel B. Kent was impeached for having sexually assaulted two employees of the Office of the Clerk of the Court, and lying to a panel of judicial investigators as well as lying to Department of Justice attorneys and the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his conduct after both women made statements to the contrary.

Judge Kent was indicted and pled guilty and was sentenced to imprisonment for the felony of obstruction of justice in violation of section 1512(c)(2) of title 18, United States Code, on the basis of false statements made to the Committee. The sentencing judge described his conduct as "a stain on the justice system itself."

Judge Kent entered the Devens Federal Medical Center in Massachusetts Monday to begin serving a 33-month sentence. He pleaded guilty last month to lying to judicial investigators about the sexual attacks, but has refused to resign. If the House approves this measure, then the Senate can begin an impeachment trial.
