Coked Up Sharks busted off the Yucatan Penunsula
18:0318/06/2009
MOSCOW, June 18 (RIA Novosti) - Mexican Navy officers have seized 893 kilograms (1,968 pounds) of cocaine that was stuffed into 30 frozen shark carcasses bound for the United States, Dive magazine reported on Thursday.
The Dover Strait container ship was detained off the Yucatan Peninsula by Mexican authorities on suspicion of drug smuggling. X-ray machines and dogs were used to search the ship. The narcotics were found wrapped in 870 plastic bags inside the sharks.
The discovery was made after the naval officers stopped the Florida-bound ship at the port of Progreso.
Navy Commander Eduardo Villa told reporters: "Those in charge of the shipment said it was a 'conserving agent,' but after checks we confirmed it was cocaine."
The ship received its cargo in Costa Rica and was sailing under a Marshall Islands flag.
Latin American drug cartels are notoriously inventive in smuggling drugs into the U.S., placing drugs in picture frames, boots, religious statues, and even sealed beer cans.
