Brian Blair, former professional wrestler, charged with felony assault

On June 21, 2009, Brian Blair was arrested by Hillsborough County Sheriff Department in Tampa, Florida, accused of beating his sons. According to the arrest report, Blair pushed his 17-year-old son, Brett, in the chest at the family's home.

When Brett tried to walk away, Blair grabbed him, punched him in the face and put him in a choke hold, making it tough for his son to breathe. Blair then turned his attention to his 12-year-old son, Bradley. He grabbed the boy by the throat and punched him in the head, leaving a mark.

Local newspapers indicated Blair hit both of his children. The second child is 12 years old. He has been released on his own recognizance. Blair faces two felony child abuse charges. Blair was a former professional wrestler who had been a member of the Killer Bees tag team.

On Channel 8 in Tampa Bay also made a racial joke about Michael Jackson in September 2008 who passed away yesterday.

BECKNER: This is part of Mr. Blair’s agenda of marginalizing people in our community. He’s had a history of it. He’s marginalized the Muslim community. He’s pushed for banning books in our libraries.  He slighted our African American community. Mr. Blair has done more to drive down the socio- and economic value of our community than anybody other than former commissioner Ronda Storms.

BLAIR: That’s a complete fabrication. First off, I just supported giving the NAACP $15,000. I’ve been on the Urban Caucus for the last four years. I’ve coached black kids. Black children stay at my home almost every weekend. I was born in Gary, Indiana, you know where that is, Kevin.

There were very few white people in my neighborhood. I didn’t know what prejudice was. Probably the only two white people in my neighborhood were myself and Michael Jackson. My friends were all black. … You’re flat-out wrong. [emphasis added]

Last November, Blair was defeated for re-election by financial planner Kevin Beckner. After the election, Blair sued Beckner, contending for libel.

Beckner's attorneys said the statements in dispute were nothing more than typical campaign rhetoric.

Blair was a conservative politician who made many controversial statements while he was a Hillsborough County commissioner. His Christian fueled intolerance for Muslims and gays was well known. ironically, the man who took his county commission job is gay.
