Who said there was no mandate?

The electoral vote was even worse, 332 to 206.

Republicans are claiming they got a mandate in Congress, but Democrats gained seats in both the House and the Senate.

Russian Victory Day Parade: Part 3

Most of the Russian military hardware was included in Part 3 of the Victory Day Parade. This is a big holiday in Russia that celebrates the victory of the Soviet Union over the Nazis in World War 2.

The event also involves more than 100 pieces of military hardware, including Topol-M ballistic missile launchers, S-400 Triumph air defense systems, Pantsyr-S1 air defense systems, Iskander-M missile launchers, Smerch multiple rocket launchers, BTR-80 armored personnel carriers, and T-90 main battle tanks.

Rightardia found a companion piece that suggested the Russians could have won World War 2 without the help of the allies.
This would have taken the Russians a lot longer, of course. The US was engaging the Japanese in the Pacific which allowed the Soviet Union to concentrate on the the Nazis on its eastern border.
Once the Russians realized the Japanese had no intentions to attack the Soviets, Stalin moved 70 divisions from Siberia to attack the Nazis at Stalingrad. After defeating the German army at Stalingrad, the Soviets also won the biggest tank battle in World War 2 a Kursk.
After Kursk, the Nazis never recovered. The war would be over in a year.
Many historians would agree that the ailed bombing of Germany was not that effective, but certainly the US Pacific front took a lot of pressure off of the Soviets on their western borders.
The US lend lease programs provided tanks, aircraft, munitions and food that also helped the Soviet war effort.
The Soviet Union alone indeed could have won World War II, but would have done it at a much slower pace, believes British historian Professor Geoffrey Roberts.
“The Soviet Union could have defeated Nazi Germany on its own, but it would have taken it a lot longer and at much greater price and, of course, it would have taken the country much longer to recover after World War II,” he told RT.
“Yes, the Soviet Union did not ultimately need its allies to win the war, but its alliance with particularly the United States and Great Britain helped it to win the war a lot quicker than it would have otherwise been the case,” he added.
According to Roberts, following World War II, the Soviet Union was much less enthusiastic about the Cold War than its recent allies, the USA and Great Britain.
“On the Western side, once the Cold War had broken out, there was a much more positive engagement with the Cold War, whereas on the Soviet side there was a reluctance to become involved in the Cold War and continuous efforts to revive the Grand Alliance,” he said.
“One of the great themes of post-war Soviet foreign policy is a desire to return to the Grand Alliance,” Roberts added.

Russian fighter aircraft and helicopters rehearse for Victory Day

Dozens of helicopters took to the air and Russia’s elite aerobatic groups Russkiye Vityazi (Knights)and Strizhi (Swifts) flew in a diamond formation during a large-scale Air Force rehearsal of the May 9 Victory Day parade at the Kubinka Air Force base near Moscow.

On May 9, Russkiye Vityazi and Strizhi will fly in a nine-aircraft diamond, a signature formation of the two aerobatic groups in which the distance between fighter jets does not exceed one meter.

Other aerobatic maneuvers will not be shown over safety concerns. A total of 125 aircraft will take part in the Victory Day Parade on Red Square in Moscow.

US band may participate in Victory Day parade on Red Square

Over 1,500 musicians from the Consolidated Orchestral Regiment of Russia’s Defense Ministry have started rehearsals for the Victory Parade to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War 2.

Joining Russian musicians on Red Square will be their colleagues from the Allied nations, among them Britain’s Royal Philharmonic orchestra representing one of the leading members of the anti-Hitler Coalition taking part in Victory Day parade. A US band has also been invited.

The may 9 holiday is the biggest in Russia. More than 28 million Russians died during the Great Patriotic War.

The heads of state and government from 45 countries and representatives of many international organizations will be taking part in V-Day celebrations in Moscow. Photo: Moscow Military District Orchestra rehearsing for Victory Day parade

Ria Novosti: Russian dress rehearsal for Victory Day

12:4514/04/2010
The Russian Victory Day or May 9 marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War (also known as the Great Patriotic War in the Soviet Union and some post-Soviet states).

The dress rehearsal involved 127 aircraft and helicopters, and over 150 items of past and present arms, which are to roll and fly over Red Square on May 9. The parade has been timed to a second and will last exactly 73 minutes. This timeline will be observed on May 9, too.

The first to enter the improvised Red Square were over 10,000 marching troops. They were followed by legendary T-34 tanks, SU-100 self-propelled gun mounts, surface-to-air missile systems and heavy flame-throwers.

As many as 127 fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft of the Russian Air Force flew above, including the renowned Swifts and Russian Knights aerobatic teams. The world’s largest mass-produced MI-26 helicopters will take part in the parade for the first time.

The parade will not be limited to Moscow alone: at 10 a.m. Moscow time on May 9, more than 60 Russian cities will hold similar events.

The US will have plenty of embassy and related folks looking at the Russian hardware.  The Russians are developing a new main battle tanks called the T-95. Perhaps, some of the new tanks will roll by during the Victory Day parade.

Repainting military equipment for Victory Day Parade

17:5602/04/2010
All equipment is being repainted inside special mobile tents or hangars. First, each vehicle is carefully cleaned, and stripped of old paint with a special solution.

Chalk is subsequently used to draw new camouflage lines on the surface. Each S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) surface-to-air missile (SAM) system requires 40 liters of green paint, 30 liters of yellow paint and 20 liters of black paint. This is more than is used on any other piece of military equipment.

More than 50% of military equipment has already been repainted. In all, 159 vehicles will take part in the May 9 Victory Day Parade on Moscow’s Red Square. Victory Day celebrates the defeat of the Nazis by the Soviets and their allies.

Western observers will be in Red square to see and photograph the latest militarily equipment in the Russian arsenal.

Obama hails 60th Senate vote for health care

WASHINGTON — Jubilant Democrats locked in Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson as the 60th and decisive vote for historic health care legislation Saturday, putting President Barack Obama's signature issue firmly on a path for Christmas Eve passage.

At the White House, Obama swiftly welcomed the breakthrough, saying, "After a nearly century-long struggle, we are on the cusp of making health care reform a reality in the United States of America."

In the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid smiled broadly when asked if Nelson's decision gave him the 60-vote majority necessary to overcome solid Republican opposition. "Seems that way," he said.

The Nevada Democrat agreed to a series of concessions on abortion and other issues demanded by Nelson in daylong talks on Friday, then informed Obama of the agreement in a late night phone call as the president flew home from climate talks in Copenhagen.

The Congressional Budget Office said the Senate bill would extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who lack it.

It also imposes new regulations to curb abuses of the insurance industry, and the president noted one last-minute addition would impose penalties on companies that "arbitrarily jack up prices" in advance of the legislation taking effect.

CBO analysts also said the legislation would cut federal deficits by $132 billion over 10 years and possibly much more in the subsequent decade.

The developments unfolded on a day of improbables – a snowstorm enveloped the Capitol, creating whiteout conditions outside; while inside senators staged dueling news conferences as if their presence on the Saturday before Christmas was the rule rather than the rarest of exceptions.

At its core, the legislation would create a new insurance exchange where consumers could shop for affordable coverage that complied with new federal guidelines. Most Americans would be required to purchase insurance, with federal subsidies available to help defray the cost for lower and middle income individuals and families.

In a concession to Nelson and other moderates, the bill lacks a government-run insurance option of the type that House Democrats inserted into theirs. In a final defeat for liberals, a proposed Medicare expansion was also jettisoned in the past several days as Reid and the White House maneuvered for 60 votes.
Story continues below

Outnumbered Republicans unleashed a new series of attacks against the legislation and vowed to delay its passage as long as possible. The next – and most critical – test vote was set for about 1 a.m. Monday.

To secure passage, Democrats will need to show 60 votes on two additional occasions, and in the meantime, Reid made sure Republicans would have no additional chances to seek changes to the measure.
