A non-believers view of religion

Most of these are Meriam Webster definitions. A couple of definitions are also provided by Wikipedia.

Atheist--one who believes that there is no deity

Agnostic--a person who does not have a definite belief about whether God exists or not

Gnosticism ("having knowledge"), is a modern term categorizing a collection of ancient religions whose adherents shunned the Demiurge– which they viewed as created by – and embraced the spiritual world. (Wikipedia)

Fundamentalism--a movement in 20th century Protestantism emphasizing the literally interpreted Bible as to Christian life and teaching

Evangelical--of or relating to a Christian sect or group that stresses the authority of the Bible, the importance of believing that Jesus Christ saved you personally from sin or hell, and the preaching of these beliefs to other people.

Deism--a movement or system of thought advocating natural religion, emphasizing morality, and in the 18th century denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe .

Theism--belief in the existence of a god or gods; specifically a belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of the human race and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world.

Spirituality--most any kind of meaningful activity. It is often separated from organized religious institutions, as in the phrase "spiritual but not religious". Traditionally, spirituality refers to a process of re-formation of the personality live a life according to divine will, but there is no single, agreed-upon definition of spirituality.

Many people think atheists and agnostics are different. Actually, most atheists are agnostic. Richard Dawkins has even said it would be fine with him if god did exist. Most atheists like Richard Dawkins do not have any special knowledge about the existence of non-existence of god. Therefore, most atheists are, in fact, agnostic They just do not know.

An agnostic, therefore, is someone who lacks special knowledge about something like God or religion. It is the opposite of gnostic.

On the other hand, a gnostic atheist would be positive that god doesn't exist. Few atheists take this position. Most view god as irrelevant or that people who are adamant about gods' existence need to prove it. 

Fundamentalists and Evangelicals are gnostic. There is no doubt in their minds about the existence of god. Many also think the US is a Christian nation and accordingly Americans should be following god's law, whatever that might be. For example, Kim Davis, the Rowan county Kentucky clerk, thinks she is denying marriage licenses to gay couples under the authority of God.

When the nation was founded, many of the founders were deist. They believed in god , but not organized region. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison and John Adams were deists.

Franklin may have even been an atheist: One of his famous quotes: 

Light houses are more useful than churches. 

Theists, on the other hand, participate in organized religion. It would be safe to say that most evangelicals and fundamentalists are gnostic theists. They believe god needs to be worshipped in the context of an institution or ritual. 

There is an example of theism in Judaism. Orthodox Jews say the Temple of Solomon needs be rebuilt on the Temple Mount because it is the only place that God can reside on earth. This is considered the holiest place in Judaism,

Of course the Al Aqsa Mosque would have to be destroyed to rebuild the temple. 

There are also people into spirituality who do not show any interest in organized religion, but believe something is out there. People who are into spirituality appear to be the modern version of deists. 

In summary, most atheists are agnostic. And most fundamentalists and evangelicals are gnostic theists. People into spirituality are, for all intents and purposes, deists.

Religions is a tool of the right wing

Religion has been a tool of he right wing and the status quo for centuries.  The Germans viewed World War 2 as a struggle between religion and atheism  the Germans actually had more Teutonic crosses on their aircraft than swastikas. Of course, the swastika has been called a "twisted cross."

Oddly, the right wing in the US picked up where the Germans left off . in the 1990s Ronald Reagan used the evangelical community to win a presidential election. Although George HW Bush was less enamored with religion than his son, Karl Rove used religion to elect his son, GW Bush.

GW Bush even tried to give the US welfare system to church leaders after the election, but the church leaders balked at the idea stating that wasn't the mission of the churches.

Rightardia has a secular humanist slant on the world that some might call that view agnostic atheism. By using the term agnostic we mean we have no special knowledge that God exists or does not. We have no idea. At the same time the religious community has offered scant evidence of god's existence  Many religious people take a Gnostic view in that they have special knowledge of god's existence.

Pat Robertson is a good example of this when he says he knew who will be the next president.

Robertson later admitted he got God's message wrong suggesting Robertson believed God had told him that Mitt Romney would win. Robertson also said the president's policies do not reflect what American believe.  Of course, Obama had a convincing election win both in popular vote and electorally. Obama won by more that 4.5 million votes

Don't forget Billy Graham either. He invited Mitt Romney to his church and then removed the Mormon faith form the Billy Graham cult list to give the Republican an election a boost with evangelical.  Right after the election, the Mormon Church went back on the cult list when officials from Graham's church admitted they had made a mistake about the Mormon faith.

Many years ago Sinclair Lewis made a famous quite about fascism:

American fascism has elements of capitalism, religion and jingoistic patriotism  Another world for fascism is corporatism.

Churches has always looked toward corporate sponsors for church contributions and have reminded their flock to look the other way when corporate abuses were occurring. Why worry about the here and now when paradise is waiting for the obedient in heaven?

Is it possible that a supreme being created the universe?

Certainly, but why would a supreme being need to be worshiped or hang around one small planet in he middle of a very large universe?

Even the Founders believed the universe was inhabited by other intelligent worlds and that there were probably sentient beings who are a lot smarter than the people on earth. Many of the founders were also deists. They believed in God, but not in organized religion.

In fact, it  is rumored that Ben Franklin was an atheist,

Thomas Jefferson even edited the Bible.

"The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from the New Testament as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels which contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages indicating Jesus was divine," 

Of course, these same  four gospels  of gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the ones that are embraced by evangelicals and fundamentalists.

If you have concerns about about Mitten's regiion, this may answer some of your questions. Romeny is a devout Mormon who has been been both a Mormon bishop and stake holder or stake presidnet.

Joseph Smith perceived the Bible had been translated incorrectly.  He used seer stone which were equivalent to a crystal ball to translate  the golden plates he discovered in NY and "corrected" the Bible.

Elohim was the arch god in Judaism who created Jahweh and Asherah, his wife. Around 600 bce, King Joseph/Josiah got rid of Asherah and Judsiam become monotheistic.

However, it was Elohim who created Adam and Eve. Elohim is a plural Hebrew form which may denote the dual sexauaity of Elohim, who was both male and female.

Many modern Mormons now try to distance themselves from these views simply because of their blatant absurdity, yet still cannot manage to simply walk away from their religion, such is the power of the constraints of religion on the mind. 

Despite these absurdities, millions of Americans call themselves Mormons today.

Interlude with an Evangelical

Without religion, we'd have good people doing good things, and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

The Major was walking with his wife on an excellent beach in Pinellas county, FL. it was one of those rare times when a couple who has a large active family can slip away for perhaps a half an hour.

The Major is walking on the beech with his quad cane when he is approached by another couple. A man asked if The Major had hurt his knee. The Major's wife said, "No, it was something else.

The man then offered to say a prayer with The Major.

The Major looked at the man and said, "No thank you. I'm not religious."

At this point the other man should have retreated and apologized for the intrusion.

Instead he said, Even if you don't love god, He loves you!

The Major retorted, "Well, you are certainly entitled to you opinion."

It is likely the man was a clergyman or an Evangelical who wanted to invite my wife and I to his church. Proselytisation is a big part of Christianity and has been for two millennia.

The Christian right often suggests that atheism is a religion. Most non-believers simply want to be left alone by the likes of the Evangelical the Major met on the beach.

Atheists don't  proselytize. We don't try to make religious people into non-believers. However, if pressed about our "beliefs' we will be happy to explain there is little evidence for a supreme being.

Most atheists are also agnostic. We know that the existence of God can nether be proven or disproven. Many Christians on the other hand, are gnostic, they intuitively know that God exists.

Most of the friction arises between non-believers and religious when religious people try to force their values on others by insisting on prayers at the start of public events or by adding religious content to schools or other public institutions.

Evangelicals are also cliquish. There are evangelical cliques in the armed services.  This is big problem in the Air Force because the Air Force Academy is located near Colorado Springs, an Evangelical hot bed. Many of the young academy graduates who will  be the future leaders of the air Force marry local evangelical girls.

By cliquishness, the major means this. You are either one of use or against us. There are no gray areas in the Evangelical mind.

It is interesting that the Evangelical the major met at the beach assumed God is a man. The Hebrew creator was named Elohim, a plural form, and Elohim was both male and female.

Elohim created two gods, Yahweh, who was male and Asherah, who was female. King Joseph or Josiah, get rid of Asherah around 600 BCE. Asherah was more popular than Jahweh, who was a mashugana.

At the time, Asherah had shrines along roads and her likeness was in every Hebrew kitchen. King Josiah encouraged the exclusive worship of Yahweh and outlawed all other forms of worship. So Judaism became a monotheistic religion.

CBS DC: ‘We Are Stronger’ to Hold Massive Rally On National Mall Next Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSDC) – "Thousands of atheists are expected to attend the Reason Rally next month in Washington, D.C., an event that organizers hope will unify a large part of the secular community.

On March 24, the National Mall will be populated by those who sympathize with atheist perspectives, generally defined by an absence in belief of deities or other religious icons."

Rightardia prefers the term 'non-believer" rather than atheist because non-believer is a more inclusive term. Non-believers include atheists, agnostics, and people who no longer attend church. 


For that matter a person wh0 is religious and even believes in organized religion, but also firmly believes in the separation of church and state should be welcome in a secular movement. 

Early in the history of the US, we had deist leaders who believed in God, but not organized religion. Many of our founders, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin  Franklin and John Adams were deists. 


The Reason Rally hopes to affect the 2012 elections by injecting a discussion of the separation between church and state into the national dialogue. 

This is overdue because the right wing has been distorting the secular nature of our nation for years. 

The Reason Rally should be as inclusive as possible.

Fox news spars with prominent atheist over anti-Christmas billboard

A new billboard is causing a bit of a stir in New Jersey.

The ad, which appears on a highway that leads to New York City’s Lincoln Tunnel, features a nativity scene stamped with an unexpected message: “You know it’s a myth. This season, celebrate reason!”

As the bottom of the billboard reveals, the space was rented by American Atheists.

Today, the president of that organization, Dave Silverman, stopped by America Live to talk about religion, free speech, and the “war on Christmas” with Megyn Kelly.

National Day Of Prayer Unconstitutional

The National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional according to a federal judge in Wisconsin.


In a 66-page opinion issued Thursday, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb said the holiday violates the "establishment clause" of the First Amendment, which creates a separation of church and state.

"I understand that many may disagree with that conclusion and some may even view it as a criticism of prayer or those who pray," Crabb said in her opinion.

"That is unfortunate. A determination that the government may not endorse a religious message is not a determination that the message itself is harmful, unimportant or undeserving of dissemination."

The National Day of Prayer was first established by Congress in 1952, with a more specific date for the holiday set in 1988. It is now observed on the first Thursday in May.

The ruling result from a lawsuit filed by members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Madison, Wisconsin group founded in 1976. The group is pledged to promote the concept of separation of church and state. It also seeks to educate the public on matters of “nontheism.”

The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, praised the ruling.

“This decision is a tremendous victory for religious liberty,” he said. “Congress has no business telling Americans when or how to pray.”

Rightardia has long contended that the Founders intentions about the separation of church and state were clear in the Treaty of Tripoli. This treaty was signed by President John Adams and ratified by all of the members of the US Senate. 

Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli states: 

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Athiest Agenda: UTSA students are butting heads over a "bibles for porn" program

An atheist agenda group has been handing out adult magazines in exchange for any type of religious scripture.

University officials allowed the program because they say it's a first amendment right.

However, many students said they are offended by the program.

The atheist agenda group has done the "smut for smut" program in years past.  This time around they handed out about 40 adult magazines for religious texts.

Athiest Life v. Religious Life video

This is an excellent video that explains the rationality and advantages of a secular life style sometimes referred to atheism or agnosticism.

Rightardia believes that secular humanism is a more rational approach to the world and that most religions are based on mysticism and irrationality. We prefer the term secular humanism because atheism has negative connotations.

Secular humanists like Richard Dawkins do not discount the existence of God. Dawkins simply requires proof!

Atheism is a double negative that religious people prefer to hang on 'non-believers' The non-belief in a non-entity is logical. The unproven belief in a supreme being is illogical.

Who is this supreme being? Who created the supreme being? Where does the supreme being live? Religion has no answers for any of these questions and prefers an a priori approach: that's just the way it is. You must have faith.

Secular humanism has a more positive outlook: show me or shut up! Prove it. This puts the onus onto the religious community to prove that God exists rather than the secular humanists, atheists, agnostics and other non-believers to prove otherwise.

Are you a secular humanist, athtiest, agnostic or just don't care about religion?

Rightardia found a great source of secular humanist posters called the 'Unapologetics.'

We will be featuring these posters regulary to counter the absurd notion that the US is a Christian nation. We have pointed out that the Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli that was written shortly after this nation was founded states "the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."

Unapologetics are sarcastic, critical posters that take popular theological beliefs and counter them to point out just how absurd and ridiculous they really are. Maybe it feels more intellectual to use sophisticated arguments, but sometimes an image and short phrase are sufficient to unmask the pretensions behind religious pablum.

It's may be more productive to laugh at silly arguments than to take them seriously. There is a time for philosophical, atheological arguments and there is a time for laughter, humor, and sarcasm.

Of interest, Jeb Bush's dragon lady, Katherine Harris, has a new crusade. She wants to tell Americans about the 'great lie' that the US is not a Christian nation. This is the same old conservative story similar to another that the US was founded by white people.

Dear God, I Am Agnostic. Is That Ok?

Editor's Note: I liked this article a lot that was the lead on Virtual Synapses blog.  Agnostics fit somewhere in between deists and atheists. Deists believe in God but aren't big on organized religion. Many of the Founding Fathers such as Jefferson, Adams and Franklin were deists.


I like Buddhism and other Eastern religions because they don't have the mysticism that permeates Western religions. You don't have to believe in angels or other divinities to be Buddhist. Most religions arose in the Bronze Age to explain the world before science existed.


The faith argument suggests you should believe in a priori values that cannot be proven. I am a man of little faith. I remember what happened when we had a man of faith in the White House for the past eight years.

I was born into a family of believers (Catholic). My parents, grandparents, wife, in-laws, brothers, cousins, aunts, and uncles are all faithful people and I have not the slightest doubt that they believe in God. Sometimes I ask myself, “Am I some sort of mutation in the gene pool?” Everyone around me goes to church, say their prayers, have faith in God, and live good lives. There’s probably something wrong with me.

Maybe I’m just a noninterventionist dumbass, but I think the only significant difference I found between me and my folks, regarding this issue, is that I asked “the question” and took it seriously. Everybody asks that question, right? What’s the question? Oh, geez, you know what I’m talking about. Here, answer this by filling in the blank:

Is there a _________?

Hint: It starts with the letter G and ends with a D.

Question: What reason do you have for being agnostic?
Answer: There are two sides of the coin. I just want to stay in between, if that's possible.

Good vs Evil

I think good and evil are created illusions. When you do something positive to other people, then that is considered good. When you do something negative, then you’re a bad ass person. But what if you don’t do anything at all? Let’s say that you go to a mountain to find a cave and spend the rest of your life just being there. There is no social interaction of whatsoever. Is that good or is that evil?

Religion vs Science

Roman Catholic, Anglican, Independent Catholic, Old Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anabaptist, Baptist, Methodist, Adventist, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian, and so on and so forth. These are just some of the denominations of the Christian religion. Wait till I enumerate the ones under Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and the rest of the main religions on earth. Isn’t it absurd for us to tag ourselves as a “human race” when we can’t even find a unified belief system that can bring us all together?

On the other hand, some people put their faith in science. They say that as long as any phenomenon can be explained with empirical evidence, that’s good enough for them. Are you telling me that you want to put your faith in the hands of scientists who, as much as any other person in the planet, have their own biases and inadequacies in perceiving reality? How clever.

Mysticism vs Skepticism

Mysticism adds its own different shade of color to people’s thought processes. The archenemies of mystics are skeptics. The former is trying to go beyond the five senses to explain reality, while the latter wants to remain conventional. If you’re going to take sides, I suggest that you try Michael Jackson’s medicine.

Will you be interested to know about your karma? Would you like to know how many reincarnations you’ve been through? Do you want to get out of your body and possess Brad Pitt’s so you can play with Ms. Tomb Raider? The skeptics are saying, “STOP *lucid* DREAMING!!”

Materialism vs Idealism

Quantum physicists have concluded that matter is literally an empty vacuum. Experts are justified in regarding the atom as 99.9999999% empty. I nearly ruptured a vein in my head trying to answer this question, “If matter is empty and nothing really exists physically, what are quantum physicists? Are these people some sort of illusion?

There is no God! There is a God! There is no God! There is a God! Blah3x… Yada3x...

Jesus H. Christ! Would you self-absorbed and power-hungry mass butchers stop confusing people? There’s already enough suffering in the world. Stop playing with their minds. Stop claiming that you know that truth when you clearly have no idea at all about what it is, where it is, and how to find it. Nobody really knows the truth, damn it. I don’t even know if what I’m saying is true.


Determinism vs Indeterminism

Imagine the chain of events that happened starting from the big bang (creation of the universe) until the point when you reach the end of this sentence. Ok, STOP. Think for a moment. Do you realize how everything almost seems to cause everything? Just look at the sun. Everything that the planet earth has gone through is undoubtedly caused by this massive ball of light. The sun was formed, then the solar system, then the planets, the life on earth emerged, your parents met, and then voila! Nice to meet you.

When there is a cause, there is an effect. When there’s a beginning, there’s an end. Everything happens for a reason and I am here because I was intended to be here. And, after all of this, my end will come. So what is my end? If everything in my life is determined by “you know who” then do I really have a choice? Does choice even exist?

Wahoo! I’m glad I reached the end of this article without experiencing symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage. Anyway, agnosticism is still a belief. It’s a belief about not believing in anything. If I believe that I don’t believe in anything, then I believe I’m probably screwed for the rest of my life? Noooooooooooooo…
