Wikipedia Blast from the past: the Nazis and the Vatican

The Reichskonkordat is the concordat between the Holy See and Germany, guaranteeing the rights of the Catholic Church in Germany. It was signed on July 20, 1933 by Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli (who later became Pope Pius XII) and Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen on behalf of Pope Pius XI and President Paul von Hindenburg respectively.

On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor. On 23 March 1933, his government was given dictatorial powers through the Enabling Act. 

Hitler had obtained the votes of the Centre Party, led by Prelate Ludwig Kaas, by issuing oral guarantees of the party's continued existence and the autonomy of the Church and her educational institutions.

He also promised good relations with the Holy See, which some interpret as a hint to a future concordat or treaty between a church and a state.

Thus, on April 8, Hitler sent his vice chancellor, a Catholic nobleman and former member of the Centre Party, to Rome.

Hitler intended to deal a decisive blow against both his political opponents, as well as potential competitors, while simultaneously gaining and cementing international prestige amongst Catholic nations.

Many conservatives have suggested  Hitler was an atheist, but Hitler had been raised Roman Catholic. Why would an atheist negotiate with the Vatican? Some historians believe that Hitler wanted to establish a new religion in Germany that had elements of Catholicism and his own personal beliefs about he occult.

In addition, if Hitler and the Nazis were atheists, why did they paint Teutonic crosses on their warplanes and tanks? 

Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber wrote to Cardinal Pacelli on April 10, 1933 advising that defending the Jews would be wrong:

because that would transform the attack on the Jews into an attack on the Church; and because the Jews are able to look after themselves.

At an April 26, meeting with representatives of the German Bishops’ Conference, Hitler declared:

I have been attacked because of my handling of the Jewish question. The Catholic Church considered the Jews pestilent for fifteen hundred years, put them in ghettos, etc., because it recognized the Jews for what they were.

In the epoch of liberalism the danger was no longer recognized. I am moving back toward the time in which a fifteen-hundred-year-long tradition was implemented. 

I do not set race over religion, but I recognize the representatives of this race as pestilent for the state and for the Church, and perhaps I am thereby doing Christianity a great service by pushing them out of schools and public functions . . .

The Vatican was unable to include  Catholic clergy and organisations in politics. Its role in politics was solely to the religious and charitable field.

The Nazis slowly eliminated the Catholic Centre Party.  One of Hitler's key conditions for agreeing to the concordat, in violation of earlier promises, had been the dissolution of the Centre Party.

On 14 July 1933 Hitler accepted the Concordat.

Yes, after the Enabling Act was passed Hitler aboloshed all of the German trade unions and even confiscated their funds and used the money to fund the Strength through Joy programme. 

In May, 1933, Robert Ley was given the task of forming the Labour Front (DAF), the only state sanctioned union organization allowed in the Third Reich. Ley ordered the building of two new cruise-liners as part of the Strength through Joy programme that were used to take German workers on foreign holidays. 

The Strength through Joy programme also built sports facilities, paid for theatre visits and financially supported travelling cabaret groups. It also subsidized the development of the People's Car, the Volkswagen.

German worker paid for these benefits through compulsory deductions. The holidays and subsidized entertainment were of great propaganda value to the Nazi government.

Right-wing media's selective outrage over Nazi references

Rightardia has never understood why progressives and liberals are reluctant to use the f-word: fascism while Democrat have been erroneously called socialists for years. Republican ideas, are, in fact, often undistinguishable from the fascist ideas of World War 2.

NAACP President Ben Jealous: Our Jewish friends sitting around saying this is too much like the period before Kristallnacht. And old black folks sitting around going, I don't know if this is more like when my granddaddy told me about the end of Reconstruction or what I witnessed with the rise of the White Citizens Council.

Beck's website hyped the video, claiming Jealous said "America like Before Kristallnacht." On September 27, Glenn Beck's website, The Blaze, posted the video of Jealous' comments under the headline, "NAACP: One Nation March About Not Calling Obama an African Witch Doctor, America like Before Kristallnacht."

Beck then airs Jealous clip, asks, "Who's calling whom Hitler?" On the September 27 edition of his radio show, Beck played a clip of Jealous' comments and stated, "So he's talking about that there are people who want to purge people - that the Jews are saying, oh, I don't know what's happening, I guess with the tea parties - is too much like Kristallnacht. Who's calling whom Hitler?"

Right-wing media have long history of invoking Nazi references to attack Obama and his policies as well as progressive figures. Right-wing media figures - led by Beck -- have a long history of invoking the Holocaust, the Nazi Party, and Adolf Hitler to smear the Obama administration, other progressive individuals and organizations. For instance:

Beck: Holocaust survivor's story of how Nazis drove a wedge between students and parents sounds like U.N. and Gore. On the September 24 edition of his Fox News show, Beck hosted a Holocaust survivor who said that the Nazis drove a wedge between students and their parents. . .

Beck: Progressives use "democratic elections" to push dictators -- "Hitler, 'democratically elected.' " On the April 28 edition of his Fox News show, Beck stated that progressives use "democratic elections" to push dictators, then stated, "You'll hear this when they talk about the 'democratically elected' leader of Iran; the democratic leader Chavez, 'democratically elected,' you know; Castro, 'democratically elected'; Hitler - 'democratically elected.' "

Beck: "Progressives build the structure that a communist, a Marxist, a Nazi would love to have." On the April 22 edition of his radio show, Beck stated that "[p]rogressives build the structure that a communist, a Marxist, a Nazi would love to have."

Beck invokes Nazis to attack worker ID cards: "It was only one of the first things that Hitler did." On the March 9 edition of his radio show, Beck discussed national ID cards for workers and said, "It was only one of the first things that Hitler did."

Beck on Obama's "civilian national security force": "This is what Hitler did with the SS." Discussing President Obama's call for a "civilian national security force" -- which was a reference to expanding the foreign service, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps -- Beck said on the August 27, 2009, edition of his Fox News program:

Beck: "I'm not comparing" Obama to Hitler, but asked his audience to "please read Mein Kampf" and learn from Germany's mistakes. On the August 12, 2009, broadcast of his radio show, discussing Obama's position on health care reform, Beck stated:

Beck told Newsmax: "I fear a Reichstag moment." On September 29, 2009, conservative news website Newsmax.com reported of its interview with Beck:

Beck links health care reform to Nazis, suggests reform would kill elderly and newborns. On his August 6, 2009, radio show, Beck suggested that health care reform would lead to the eugenics programs undertaken in Nazi Germany, saying that "three people in the White House are in love with eugenics" and that reform would kill the elderly and newborns.

Beck's comment on Nazi health care is clearly propaganda. The Germans had the first health care system in Europe in the 1890's. A conservative leader, Otto von Bismarck, established the German health care system.

Beck compared car dealership closures to Nazism, warning "at some point, they're going to come for you." While discussing the closures of auto dealerships under the bankruptcy deals of GM and Chrysler, Beck said that the "poem that keeps going through my mind is 'First they came for the Jews,' " adding, "Gang, at some point they're going to come for you."

Beck compared auto bailouts to the actions of German companies "in the early days of Adolf Hitler."

While discussing the auto company bailouts on the April 1, 2009, edition of his Fox News program, after stating, "I am not saying that Barack Obama is a fascist," Beck said, "If I'm not mistaken, in the early days of Adolf Hitler, they were very happy to line up for help there as well. I mean, the companies were like, 'Hey, wait a minute. We can get, you know, we can get out of trouble here. They can help, et cetera, et cetera.' "

And so forth and so on . . .

Newt Gingrich: Obama, Dems threatening America as much as "Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union once did." On the May 16 edition of Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday, Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich said that Obama and Democratic policies threaten America as much as "Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union once did."

Limbaugh compares Obama health care plan to Nazi policies. On the October 1, 2009, edition of his radio show, Rush Limbaugh stated of Obama's health care plan: "Just as Obama's doing, Hitler - well, even prior to Hitler, German socialists attempted to remake and order their country using health care as the springboard and the foundation. Same thing that's happening here."

Limbaugh continued: "Hitler was a man of the left. Nazi is simply the term for the National Socialists of Germany. ... The National Socialists and their domestic policies - short of the Holocaust - have far more in common with what Obama's doing than anybody on the right."

Again, Htilter was neither a leftist or a socialist. The German socialists wing of the NAZI party was primarily the SA that was led by Ernst Röhm. These were the original brown shirts that Hilter had eliminated during Kristallnacht. Hitler outlawed trade unions and lowered workers' wages. He militarized the economy with the help of German corporations. His government embraced fascist values and religion as a reaction to Russian communism. The Germans painted Teutonic crosses on their aircraft and tanks.

The primary reason the Nazis came to power was because the fragmented left made up of communists and social democrats, who wouldn't work with each other. Also, Germany went into a depression after Wall Street crashed and US banks would no longer loan the Germans money.

If you look around America, progressives and liberals aren't showing up with weapons at political rallies or forming militias. Progressives aren't waving false yellow flags with rattle snakes on them. Nor are progressives fanning the fires of racism against blacks and Hispanics. We agree with Ben Jealous. He made an astute observation.

Book on Hitler Youth warns of fascist dangers in the US

High on the list of the Third Reich's atrocities was its use of state power to undermine the most basic of human rights and the subordination of all other social institutions to the prerogatives of the Party.

In "Life In The Hitler Youth" by Jennifer Keeley, the reader learns of the Nazi subversion ofthe family and realizes the disturbing parallels that can be drawn with developments unfolding in our own nation and the Republican family values agenda that includes ideological indoctrination by evangelical churches.

According to Keeley, all of German life (including the minutest detail of one's personal life) was brought under Nazi control through the policy of Gleichschaltung or coordination so that all of society and culture reflected National Socialism .

As such, the 1936 Law Concerning The Hitler Youth decreed that all of German youth were to be incorporated under the banner of this organization. The Hitler Youth or Hitler Jugend became the source of manpower for the Nazi SS.

When reading "Life In The Hitler Youth", one comes away with an uneasiness in the pit of the stomach when one realizes the similarities of the philosophies justifying a number of the programs in Nazi Germany and the United States of America.

Although the United States is nothing like Nazi Germany in terms of destroying innocent human lives, if Americans do not now get a grip on certain ideological trends festering below the surface of public policy, the nation could very easily find it self sliding in this kind of downward direction.

As Norm Chomsky has pointed out, the US took over the international role of the Germans after World War 2. The US also had a robust fascist movement in it prior to World War 2 called the Bund. Many American corporations were also openly sympathetic to the Nazis prior the the war.

In the Nazi and other fascist systems, it is not so much the individual created in the image of God protected by a set of unchanging eternal laws that matters but rather the larger group that counts.

For example, the 1936 Law Concerning The Hitler Youth read in part, "The whole of German youth is to be educated,outside the parental home and school, in the Hitler Youth physically, intellectually, and morally in the spirit of National Socialism for service to the nation and community."

As evidenced in one of Hitler’s speeches: "learn...that life for you must mean sacrifice, sacrifice of your personal freedom, sacrifice of your free time, sacrifice of many of the small pleasures of life; sacrifices when you take on yourself charges, not for the individual, not for yourself alone...but for your small, and yet so great community."

"To teach Hitler Youth the importance of their Volk community, the National Socialists suggested members participate in a form of land service. Although not obligated to do so by any mandate or decree, every year young people ... were expected to help the Volk community...This was designed to teach young people about putting the needs of the community before their own ."

The US had similar programs with Herbert Hoover's Civilain Conservation Corps that put many jobless Americans back to work. The objective of such programs --- be they either in a dictatorship or even in a representative democracy --- is ultimately to undermine the loyalty of its participants in regards to other authorities such as family or religion and to replace it with an absolute fealty to the organs of the state.

This is similar to GOP 'family values" rhetoric in which conservatives claim to represent the true American way of life.

The first phase of this program was innocent enough as it consisted of scheduling so many activities and meetings that the good Nazi family had to take part in that they were basically kept running around, away from one another,and unable to reflect more critically about what they were being lured into.

This wasn't really all that much different than what is going on in many of these Emergent and Purpose Driven megachurches these days where activities and meetings are scheduled multiple nights per week and parents are told you are less than an ideal Christian if you only show up for the traditional scheduled Sunday and perhaps Wednesday services.

These same techniques are used by both the Mormon church an the Church of Scientology. Those running afoul of National Socialist authorities underwent a process of scrutiny by the social service agencies of that day in a manner those under suspicions other than quantifiable physical abuse.

Parents refusing to go along with the Hitler Youth agenda could have their children taken away on the grounds of being "politically unreliable." One might say such parents failed to have their children "properly socialized."

Common to all forms of collectivism --- be they the communist, fascistic, or even more democratic and less blatantly homicidal varieties --- is the aspiration to so totally order the existences of those living under these systems.

Of course, the Germans believed God was on their side and Hitler may have even wanted to create a new uniquely German religion. The communists were blatantly atheistic early on, bout the Nazis wanted to manipulate religion to benefit the Nazi moment.

Keeley writes, "Finally, the Nazis attempted to replace Christianity with National Socialist ideology in the lives of youth. Some National Socialists expressed discontent with the so-called Jewish roots of Christianity...The Nazis began to remove symbols, such as the cross, from schools, but they also painted the Tuetonic crosses on their aircraft and tanks.

A prayer children were required to recite in order to receive a free school lunch:

Fuehrer, my Fuehrer, bequeathed to me by the Lord, protect and preserve me as long as I live. Thou hast rescued Germany from deepest distress. I thank thee for my daily bread. Abideth thou long with me, forsaketh me not, Fuehrer my Fuehrer, my faith and my light. Heil mein Fuehrer .

Religion was clearly enmeshed in the Nazi movement and Hitler was clearly obsessed with the occult and religious icons.

Tea Partiers are modeled after the Nazi SA

 The Tea Baggers are useful conservative idiots 

The Sturmabteilung or Storm Division, usually translated as stormtroop(er)s) abbreviated SA, functioned as a paramilitary  organization of the Nazi Party. It played a key role in thew rise of German fascism in the 1920s and 1930s.

SA men were often called "brownshirts" for the colour of their uniforms; this distinguished them from the Schutzstaffel (SS), who wore black and brown uniforms (similar to Benito Mussolini's blackshirts). The men is the SA were working class men who established a paramilitary German organization.

Brown-coloured shirts were chosen as the SA uniform because a large batch of them were cheaply available after World War I, having originally been ordered during the war for colonial troops posted to Germany's former African colonies.

The SA was also the first Nazi paramilitary group to develop pseudo-military titles for bestowal upon its members. The SA ranks were adopted by several other Nazi Party groups such as the the SS.

The SA was very important to Adolf Hitler's rise to power, but was largely irrelevant after he took control of Germany in 1933; it was effectively superseded by the SS after the Night of the Long Knives.

The precursor to the SA had acted informally and on an ad hoc basis for some time before this. Hitler, with an eye always to helping the party to grow through propaganda.

The future SA developed by organizing and formalizing the groups of ex-soldiers and beer hall brawlers who were to protect gatherings of the Nazi Party from disruptions by Social Democrats and Communists.

By September 1921 the name Sturmabteilung was being used informally for the group. Hitler, it should be noted, was the official head of the Nazi Party by this time

Under their popular leader, Stabschef Ernst Röhm, the SA grew in importance within the Nazi power structure, initially growing in size to thousands of members. In 1922, the Nazi Party created a youth section, the Jugendbund, for young men between the ages of 14 and 18 years. Its successor was called the Hitler Youth or Hitler Jugend.

There were also key socioeconomic conflicts between the SS and SA. SS members generally came from the middle class, while the SA had its base among the unemployed and working class. This is very similar to the difference between the working class Tea Party members and the upper middle class frats boys and sorority sisters in the Republican Party.

Politically speaking, the SA were more radical than the SS, with its leaders arguing the Nazi revolution had not ended when Hitler achieved power, but rather needed to implement socialism in Germany.

Hitler eliminated the SA and Röhm during the Night of the Long Knives. The SA took socialism too seriously and also wanted control of the nation's ground forces.

President Paul von Hindenburg would not stand for this, and threatened to impose martial law if Hitler did not act against Röhm. Hitler ordered the arrest and subsequent execution of the leadership of the SA and actually led the attack on the SA known as the Night of the Long Knives.

Tea Partiers are arming themselves

In the end the SA were useful idiots for the rise of a fascist state in Germany.  The same scenario could be repeated in the US with the recent rise of violence and vandalism in the US since the health care reform was signed into law.

The nature of racism

If you study racism, you will discover much of it is the aftermath of war. The Southern states never had the economic vitality of the north and the people who settled the southern part of the US were different from the people who settled the North. As Alexis de Toqueville stated:

The men sent to Virginia were seekers of gold, adventurers without resources and without character, whose turbulent and restless spirit endangered the infant colony...Artisans and agriculturalists arrived afterwards...hardly in any respect above the level of the inferior classes in England. No lofty views, no spiritual conception presided over the foundation of these new settlements. 

The colony was scarcely established when slavery was introduced; this was the capital fact which was to exercise an immense influence on the character, the laws and the whole future of the South. Slavery...dishonors labor; it introduces idleness into society, and with idleness, ignorance and pride, luxury and distress. It enervates the powers of the mind and benumbs the activity of man. On this same English foundation there developed in the North very different characteristics.

In 1855, de Toqueville wrote the following text published by Maria Weston Chapman in the Liberty Bell: Testimony against Slavery:

I do not think it is for me, a foreigner, to indicate to the United States the time, the measures, or the men by whom Slavery shall be abolished. Still, as the persevering enemy of despotism everywhere, and under all its forms, I am pained and astonished by the fact that the freest people in the world is, at the present time, almost the only one among civilized and Christian nations which yet maintains personal servitude; and this while serfdom itself is about disappearing, where it has not already disappeared, from the most degraded nations of Europe.

An old and sincere friend of America, I am uneasy at seeing Slavery retard her progress, tarnish her glory, furnish arms to her detractors, compromise the future career of the Union which is the guaranty of her safety and greatness, and point out beforehand to her, to all her enemies, the spot where they are to strike. 

After the Civil War the slaves were freed, but Jim Crow laws were passed that assured de jure segregation until 1965. These laws and the Klu Klux Klan also suppressed the black vote in the South until LBJ got the Voting Rights Act passed in the mid-sixties. Blacks were not allowed to marry whites either until miscegenation laws were overturned in the 1960s as well.


The blacks became the scapegoat of the Civil War. Many Southerners still blame the loss of civil War on black Americans. Many blacks served in the Union Army, but Southerners were afraid to arm their black slaves. When the South lost the war, the blacks became a convenient bogeyman. 

Fast forward to World War 1. The War was stalemate until the British introduced tanks on the battlefield and aircraft started conducting reconnaissance and bombing missions which made trench warfare obsolete. 

In Germany, Jews were not allowed to own property and had to live in the cities. The Spartacist uprising (German: Spartakusaufstand), also known as the January uprising (Januaraufstand), was a general strike (and the armed battles accompanying it) in Germany from January 5 to January 12, 1919. Although this strike started after the war ended, there were more than 60 strikes in Germany during World War 1.

The name Spartacist uprising was only one of a number of reasons contributing to disillusionment within Germany towards the Weimar Government. One of the most important labor leaders, Rosa Luxemburg, was Jewish.

When the stike was suppressed by the Freikorps, who had weapons left over from the war, the strike leaders were executed. Many of the Nazi leaders such as Adolf Hitler, had been members of the Freikorps. Hitler actually got his start in politics by spying on liberals, socialists and German communists.

Hitler blamed the strikes and the Jewish leaders of the stikes for the loss of World War 1. This is the basis of much of the German anti-Semitism that led up to World War 2. Hitler was well aware of the Final Solution and wanted all the Jews in occupied areas exterminated so they would not be able to retaliate against the sons of daughters of the Nazis.

The Nazi movement was syndicalist rather than socilist. Hitler killed off most of the socialist Sturmabteilung  or SA in the Nazi party during the Night of the Long Knives. Hitler ordered the head of the SA, Ernst Röhm, to be shot when he refused to commit suicide. Of interest, it was the efforts of the SA that provided Hitler's rise to power.

Heinrich Himmler. the SS chief, was more pragmatic and wanted to ransom Jews for 1000 trucks and hard cash. Himmler realized by the end of the war that the Final Solution was a huge mistake, but it was his SS forces that implemented it.

While the blacks were the scapegoats in the South for the Civil War, the Jews were the scapegoats in Germany after World War 1. Hitler may have believed the Germans would have won if the strikes hadn't occured, but Americas' entry into the war sealed the fate of the Germans.

The common racist experiences of blacks and Jews may explains the historic affinity of many American Jews for the plight of blacks in this country. Scapegoats are always needed by defeated nations to rationalize their own failures.

Supression of the Arts

Is it any surprise that people on the far left and far right want to suppress the arts?

In 1937, the government of Nazi Germany held two bizarre art exhibits in Munich. The "Great German Art" exhibition opened in the new House of German Art, which was built to look like a huge Greek temple.

This exhibit was launched with a rousing speech by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and a lavish parade with people dressed as Greek gods and goddesses. The exhibit housed what the Nazis proclaimed as the best art in Nazi Germany. They believed this art showed that Third Reich could produce art that rivaled the ancient Greeks.

A few hundred yards away, the Nazis held the second exhibit in a small building. In nine rooms, they crammed nearly 700 paintings and sculptures created by German artists. On the walls, they scrawled words insulting the works. This exhibit housed what they called "Degenerate Art," art that the Nazis believed was harmful and repugnant. Modern, or avant-garde, art filled these rooms. The exhibit was meant to hold modern art up to public ridicule.

The Nazis placed the two exhibits near each other so people could compare them. The Great German Art exhibit showed the kind of art approved of by the Nazi state. The Degenerate Art exhibit showed the kind of art that the Nazi state prohibited. The exhibits were part of an incredible Nazi campaign to put art under control of the state.

Of interest, the GOP made a big issue of a $50 million dollar appropriation for the National Endowment of the Arts during the Economic Stimulus debate.

"There is absolutely no way this will stimulate the economy," argues Brian Riedl, a senior federal budget analyst for the Heritage Foundation. He believes funding for the NEA — like several other items in the stimulus package — will not grow the economy.

"The only way to increase economic growth is to increase productivity," Riedl says. "Government policies that make people and workers more productive will increase productivity.

Michael Kaiser, head of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, says the arts industry is made up of thousands of small organizations, so they don't always make headlines when they go bankrupt.

"The arts as a totality in this country employs 5.7 million people," Kaiser says, "so we're not a small sector of this economy. Our employment levels are important to this economy."

Artists, writers and musicians often have a progressive view of America and artists are willing to express dissenting views in their work. Both the far left and far right look at atists and writers as a threat to the status quo. This is why art and music have long been suppressed by totalitarian governments.

A good example of the animosity between musicians and the GOP occurred during the 2008 elections. the music group 'Heart' did not want Sarah Palin to use its song 'Barracuda' in the campagn.

Singer Jackson Browne also won a copyright battle against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), getting an apology and an undisclosed sum of money from the 2008 presidential nominee for a pro-McCain Web video that appropriated the artist's hit song "Running On Empty."

McCain, the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party jointly settled the lawsuit and issued a statement saying:

"We apologize that a portion of the Jackson Browne song 'Running On Empty' was used without permission. Although Senator McCain had no knowledge of, or involvement in, the creation or distribution of the Web campaign video, Senator McCain does not support or condone any actions taken by anyone involved in his 2008 presidential election campaign that were inconsistent with artists' rights or the various legal protections afforded to intellectual property."

Of course, Republicans are not against all art and music. Many Republicans prefer the music of bygone eras like the Big Bands of the 1940s. They also like the traditional art of Norman Rockwell, particularly if it has an American flag in the painting, something that a serous artist would consider a cliché. OSCE blames Nazis and Soviets on WWII

VILNIUS, Lithuania - The parliamentary assembly of the Organization of Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Europe passed a resolution equating the roles of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in starting World War II.

Only eight delegates in the 385-member assembly voted against the resolution.

The non-binding resolution calls for making Aug. 23 a day of remembrance for victims of Stalinism and Nazism. That is the day in 1939 that Germany and the Soviet Union signed a pact carving up Eastern Europe between them. Germany invaded Poland a week later starting WWII.

Russia's delegates were angered by the resolution and immediately left the assembly once it passed.

“Those who place Nazism and Stalinism on the same level forget that it is the Stalin-era Soviet Union that made the biggest sacrifices and the biggest contribution to liberating Europe from fascism,” said Russian delegate Alexander Kozlovsky.

For many years the west has downplayed the role of the Soviet Union in WWII says John Laughland from the Institute for Democracy and Cooperation in Paris.

“When you look at the history of the Second World War, the fighting in the east was of such an enormous magnitude that the fighting in the west, like the Normandy landing, pales into insignificance, they are almost non-events in comparison,” Laughland said.

“One can, of course, compare Soviet communism and German Nazism, but there’s one big difference that emerges. Hitler came to power explicitly on the basis of war and racial prosecution. Soviet communism never had a racist element in the way Nazi Germany did.”

History usually supports with the country that wins the war.

Russia declassifies archive files about USSR's top secret agent in Nazi Germany

Russia’s External Intelligence Service declassified the archives about one of the most prominent Soviet intelligence officers in Nazi Germany – Willy Leman, a top secret Soviet agent nicknamed as Breitenbach.

He was USSR’s only agent at Germany’s Gestapo. Leman warned Moscow of Germany’s intention to attack the Soviet Union, RIA Novosti news agency reports.

The documents, which Leman provided to Soviet secret agents since 1941, said that Nazi Germany was preparing to attack the Soviet Union.

“On June 19, 1941, Breitenbach reported the date and the time of the beginning of the war,” a senior official with the Russian External Intelligence service, Sergey Ivanov said.

Willy Leman was born in 1884 in Leipzig. He became a woodworker at age 17, but later joined the navy. In 1911, Leman began working at the Berlin Police and was later transferred to the counter-intelligence department. He proved to be a very good counter-intelligence officer during WWI.

Leman began to cooperate with the external intelligence of the Soviet Union in 1929. He was an ardent anti-fascist and decided to help the USSR acting up to his convictions. There is a theory, though, that Leman was working for the USSR for money. He was collecting information about Germany’s political police (Gestapo), military intelligence and counter-intelligence.

When he took an official position at Germany’s defense industry, Leman began to provide top secret materials about the nation’s industry to Moscow. When a high-ranking SS officer, Leman attended military drills and military objects. He provided detailed descriptions of new types of German artillery weapons, armored vehicles, grenade launchers and so on.

In March 1941, Breitenbach said that Germany’s counter-intelligence was strengthening the units which would be working against the USSR. On June 19, 1941 Leman said that German troops were ordered to launch the attack against the USSR on June 22, at 3 am. The information was delivered to Moscow the same day.

Willy Leman was exposed in December 1942: he was executed by shooting at Gestapo. The date of his death remains unknown. His wife was told that Leman had died in a railroad accident.

Russia’s External Intelligence Service intends to use the declassified materials about Willy Leman’s fate in the struggle against the historical revisionism. The struggle will be conducted within the scope of the campaign, which President Dmitry Medvedev started.
