Ford F-150 recall, spontaneous air bag deployment

By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN, New York Times
Ford recalled 135,000 F-150 pickup trucks, because the driver’s air bag may inadvertently deploy. This affected vehicles were manufactured in 2005 and 2006.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called for 10 times as many vehicles to be recalled.

The agency says its investigation into 1.3 million F-150s revealed a significant number of incidents involving inadvertent air-bag deployments. In fact, The F-150 had the largest such number “in NHTSA history.”

FBI: Chinese National Pleads Guilty to Stealing Ford Trade Secrets

November 17, 2010 United States Attorney's Office
Eastern District of Michigan
Contact: (313) 226-9100

Former Ford employee Xiang Dong Yu, aka Mike Yu, 49, of Beijing, China, pleaded guilty today in federal court to two counts of theft of trade secrets, announced Barbara L. McQuade, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. McQuade was joined in the announcement by Andrew G. Arena, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI.

According to the plea agreement in this case, Yu was a product engineer for the Ford Motor Company from 1997 to 2007 and had access to Ford trade secrets, including Ford design documents.

In December 2006, Yu accepted a job at the China branch of a U.S. company. On the eve of his departure from Ford and before he told Ford of his new job, Yu copied some 4,000 Ford documents onto an external hard drive, including sensitive Ford design documents.

Included in those documents were system design specifications for the engine/transmission mounting subsystem, electrical distribution system, electric power supply, electrical subsystem and generic body module, among others. Ford spent millions of dollars and decades on research, development, and testing to develop and continuously improve the design specifications set forth in these documents.

The majority of the design documents copied by the defendant did not relate to his work at Ford. On December 20, 2006, the defendant traveled to the location of his new employer in Shenzhen, China, taking the Ford trade secrets with him. On January 2, 2007, Yu e-mailed his Ford supervisor from China and informed him that he was leaving Ford’s employ.

Ford ready to post record annual profits

July 26: When the economic downturn hit the car industry hard, U.S. automaker Ford rejected government bailout money.

Now it is reveling in its success, with Ford CEO Alan Mulally saying that its growth is likely to create more jobs. Ford in ready to post one of its largest annual profits ever with a 15 per cent increase in profits.

The new 2011 Explorer is built upon the Ford Taurus chassis.

The new Ford Explorer also has a 4 cylinder with the fuel injected Eco-boost engine. Rightardia doubts that type of people who bought Explorers in the past would want a 4 -cylinder engine.

As the Zen Master said, "We will see."

UAW President Fights To Convince Members To Approve Ford Concessions to save 7,000 Jobs

10/27/09

by Doug Cunningham on October 26, 2009 - 5:19pm

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger says the concessions deal negotiated with Ford will preserve jobs. It guarantees that several factories in the U.S. will get new products to build.

Gettelfinger is running into some opposition to the tentative deal from some UAW members including UAW local officials in Michigan. Ford UAW members will vote in coming days on whether or not to accept the deal.

The UAW members against approving the concessions say that Ford is profitable so it shouldn’t be getting concessions from UAW workers. Gettelfinger says the right to strike isn’t surrendered in the tentative deal with Ford when it comes to issues like wage and benefits cuts, work rules or safety issues.

It does, however, give up the right to strike over union demands for improving wages and benefits. That would be decided in binding arbitration. Gettelfinger says the Ford deal preserves at least 7,000 jobs.

Toyota tops US "cash for clunkers" sales

www.chinaview.cn 2009-08-15 11:00:53
Rightardia comment:  Rightards will probably make a lot of noise about this but the reality is it is the Republicans who wanted Cash for Clunkers or CARS to include foreign autos.

Why? Because a lot of Japanese and Korean cars are assembled by US autoworkers in the South in right to work states. These cars have foreign made engines and drive trains. Few of these workers belong to a union.

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three major U.S. automakers lost ground to foreign rivals in the latest tally of "cash for clunkers" sales as Toyota Motor Corp. dethroned General Motors Co. (GM) as the top seller, reports reaching here said Friday.

Toyota has sold 18.9 percent of vehicles purchased through the clunkers program, surpassing GM, which has sold 17.6 percent.

As of Friday morning, U.S. dealers had submitted voucher requests for just over 1.5 billion dollars, representing 358,851 vehicle purchases.
The three major U.S. automakers -- GM, Chrysler and Ford sold 42.1 percent of all clunker replacements, which is down from an initial 47 percent of sales slightly below the automakers' 44 percent U.S. market share.

Ford Motor Co. is in third place with a 15.4 percent market share. Honda Motor Co. is in fourth with 12.9 percent. Chrysler Group LLC's share fell to 9.1 percent, down from 10.6 percent on Aug. 5.

Foreign automakers now dominate the top 10 list of vehicles sold through the U.S. cash for clunkers program, with just two Ford vehicles on the list: the Ford Focus FWD in third and the Ford Escape FWD in seventh.

Several automakers, including GM, Ford and Toyota, have boosted production of fuel-efficient models as a result of the sales sparked by the program.

The Toyota Corolla retained the top spot overall, followed by the Honda Civic. The Toyota Camry is in fourth, followed by the Toyota Prius. Rounding out the top 10 are the Hyundai Elantra, the Honda Fit in eighth, the Nissan Versa in ninth and the Honda CR-V FWD in 10th.

About halfway through the 3 billion-dollar program, 83 percent of trade-ins are trucks and 59 percent of new vehicle purchases are cars.

On Thursday, U.S. Transportation Department approved plans to allow customers to order vehicles from automakers, a move that should benefit domestic automakers. Many dealers have reported shortages of fuel efficient U.S. vehicles, in part because GM and Chrysler sharply reduced production during their stays in bankruptcy.
Last Friday, President Barack Obama signed a law adding 2 billion to the program, which was in danger of running out of the first 1 billion dollars.

Bachmann bemoans Obama's 'gangsta gubermint'

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann did it again. She opened her big stupid mouth.
“Whoops, I did it again,” said Congressman Bachman, who was regularly featured on MSNBC for her idiotic outbursts.

She has a big problem with the government's involvement with the bankruptcies of GM and Chrysler. She says the forced closure of nearly 2,000 dealers amounts to gangsta' strong-arming.

Speaking on the House floor this week, Bachmann paraphrased conservative columnist Michael Barone:

“Now we've moved into the realm of gangsta' government. We have gangsta' government when the Federal Government has set up a new cartel and private businesses now have to go begging with their hand out to their local--hopefully well politically connected--congressman or their senator so they can buy a peace offering for that local business. Is that the kind of country we are going to have in the future?

We need to call this for what this is, my colleagues. We need to call this for what this is. . . No business is safe when you see the administration appoint czars--car czars, wage czars--there's over 20 czars that have been appointed. And what do those czars do? They bypass the Congress. We are the people's elected representatives; we have been bypassed.”

Bachmann's language was off-the-wall. However, earlier today, a bipartisan group of Representatives -- led by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) formally introduced a bill that would halt the dealership closing plan, which has the approval of President Obama's automobile industry restructuring panel.

According to MSNBC, 80 per cent of these auto dealers donate money to the Republican Party. In addition, many have pressured newspapers and other media to suppress criticism of borderline business practices. Local and state auto dealer associations have frequently pulled all advertising from local newspapers and broadcasters when some of their questionable burliness practices were disclosed to the public. The dealer closure will have a bigger effect on the GOP then on the Democratic Party.

Car dealers are a potent political force, contributing more than $9 million to federal candidates for the 2008 elections. It is clear that the decision to close the dealers is an automaker decision that is not being advocated by the federal government.

General Motors and Chrysler told Congress there are too many dealers to support their new operations. The sacrifices must be shared as the manufacturers try to overcome bankruptcy.

GM is aiming for "fewer, stronger brands as well as fewer, stronger dealers," stated GM President Fritz "These are tough times for everyone in the GM family."

Chrysler President James Press said: "Poor performing dealers cost us customers...If they don't sell cars, we don't either."

More than 2,700 dealerships are in line to lose their franchise. Two small-town dealers invited to appear before the committee spoke of the anguish ahead.

The executives of the struggling companies said there are too many dealers, with many often cannibalizing each other for sales. They suggested many of the dealerships date to the 1940s and 1950s, when motorists lived farther apart and Detroit automakers led the world in sales.

Detroit has wanted to get rid of these dealers for decades, but state franchise laws have made this impossible.

After losing customers for decades and losing market share to foreign competitors, the two automakers said their companies need to scale back all their operations to become leaner to become profitable again.

Chrysler is expected to emerge from bankruptcy protection within the next few days. General Motors just filed for Chapter 11 protection and its officials said they hope to be able to emerge as a new company in 60-90 days.

This is the fourth-largest bankruptcy in U.S. history and the largest for an industrial company. The automakers, in response, says taxpayers' investment is best protected by shedding unprofitable operations and strengthening the bottom line as fast as possible.

"It's not our place to change your decision," Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, told the auto executives. "But it is our place...to make sure that everyone is treated as well as can be in these circumstances."

Chrysler LLC has identified nearly 800 dealerships it plans to close next week, about a quarter of the company's dealership network. Lawmakers complained because dealers received only three weeks' notice.

General Motors told 1,100 dealerships it will not renew their franchise agreements in late 2010 and expects to shed an additional 900 dealerships by selling or discontinuing its Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands. The Hummer brand is being sold to a Chinese company. The Pontiac line has been closed down.

Chrysler dealers have only until June 9 to close down. "That termination date is needed to ensure that our new dealership structure will be firmly in place at or about the time the new company is formed with Fiat, something understandably important to Fiat," Press said. The Supreme Court is allowing the sale to Fiat to proceed.

Chrysler says its departing dealerships have resold or redistributed about 90 percent of their inventory and parts through a company program. The dropped dealers want the Obama administration to give them more time because they have only three weeks to clear them out.

GM is giving its dropped dealers until October 2010 to close.

The third Detroit automaker, Ford Motor Corp., has not filed for bankruptcy protection and has not taken any federal bailout money. It has also not announced widespread dealership closings.

GM and Chrysler also have argued that they both need a strong dealer base in to be successful. Chrysler has said that most of the dealers it is eliminating are unprofitable, don't carry all three brands of Chrysler vehicles, or are located too close to another Chrysler dealer that results in the cannibalization of sales.
