UAW President Ron Gettelfinger says the concessions deal negotiated with Ford will preserve jobs. It guarantees that several factories in the U.S. will get new products to build.
Gettelfinger is running into some opposition to the tentative deal from some UAW members including UAW local officials in Michigan. Ford UAW members will vote in coming days on whether or not to accept the deal.
The UAW members against approving the concessions say that Ford is profitable so it shouldn’t be getting concessions from UAW workers. Gettelfinger says the right to strike isn’t surrendered in the tentative deal with Ford when it comes to issues like wage and benefits cuts, work rules or safety issues.
It does, however, give up the right to strike over union demands for improving wages and benefits. That would be decided in binding arbitration. Gettelfinger says the Ford deal preserves at least 7,000 jobs.
