If the car has value, selling it directly to a buyer will save money rather than a trading it in. Be sure to get the car detailed before you try to sell it yourself.

If your really want to know what the used car is worth, we suggest you join Consumers Reports. It will give you an accurate value. You should sell your car in between the wholesale and retail value. 

Giving a car to charity is not necessarily good advice. Some of these charities are scams and ship you car to a third world country for resale.

If the car has limited value, consider trading it in.

Disabling cell phones in cars?

Some researchers say distraction from cell phones in the car is the same as driving drunk.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is considering adding new technology to cars that would automatically disable cell phones once the driver hits a certain speed.

Used Car Prices Up As Supplies Remain Limited

KCCI-TV's Steve Karlin reports. It may make more sense to purchase a new car because of the shortage of used cars that has driven up prices as high as 15 per cent above average. 

The hot used car sellers are luxury cars and SUVs, now that gas prices are down. Cars that have warranties left on them are in demand.

Ford is recalling half a million Winstars

This effects Winstars built between 1998 and 2003. The recall is in 21 salt belt states. The defect cause the rear axle to break in two.

All Winstars should be checked. Many cars from salt belt states have been resold in other states.

WSJ: The End of the Fix-It-Yourself Car 2/9/2010

Even as computers have revolutionized car safety, efficiency, and performance, they've made those same cars increasingly hard to fix, and robbed arm-chair mechanics of the thrills of tinkering in the garage.

The new era of the no fix vehicle started with autos with fuel injectors and the Ford Taurus that covered up the engine with plastic covers.  

The WSJ may have overstated the case. Most of the auto parts companies like Auto Zone have the same diagnostic equipment the auto repair people have and can tell you what the diagnostic codes say.  

You will need to buy an auto manual to repair your vehicle. Most of these auto parts stores have these manuals for less than $10.

Mercury Insurance tries to fool California voters

Ever hear of a car insurance company spending millions on a political campaign to ensure they make LESS in profits? Sounds like an April Fool's Day joke, but Mercury Insurance wants to trick you into thinking it's for real.

Proposition 17 is a deceptively written California ballot measure that Mercury wants you to believe would protect consumers. The amendments would actually allow car insurance companies to stick soldiers, seniors, students and other Californians with $1,000 surcharges if they had a break in their insurance in the past five years.

How do amendments like these get on the ballot. The simple answer is Republican lawmakers. Oh sure, there are corporate Democrats who help, too, but most of this mischief is caused by the GOP. An amendments like this is class warfare.


One technique is too bury a bad amendment with some good ones. A friendly Nick Naylor face shows up at the local library and asks passers-by if they will sign amendments to protect motherhood and apple pie.


After you sign two or three, the insurance amendment that saves you money pops up for your signature. For years people involved in the gambling industry tried to legalize gambling in Florida using this technique but failed when it came to a vote.


Now Florida is signing an agreement with the Seminole Indian Nation that will allow it to expand gambling in counties where the Seminole Tribes have reservations and existing casinos. Florida will be able to tax the gambling receipts.


This deal will be good for the Seminoles and the Florida state government. It will not benefit Floridians who have repeatedly opposed the expansion of gambling in the state.

China may reject purchase of the Hummer

A key government agency is inclined to reject Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery's controversial bid to buy the Hummer brand from bankrupt US car giant General Motors, China National Radio (CNR) reported yesterday.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the nation's top economic planning body, may reject the deal on the grounds that Tengzhong lacks the expertise and resources to run Hummer's operations, and that the gas-guzzling brand does not fit in with the country's energy-saving policy, CNR reported, without citing sources.

The NDRC is a key government body in approving the Chinese company's overseas acquisition deal.

Only the Ministry of Commerce, which together with the State Administration of Foreign Exchange is also involved in approving such overseas acquisition deals, has made public comments about the deal.

Tengzhong's bid is "rational and normal" given the current global financial crisis, Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, said last week.

But Yao said his ministry had not yet received any application from relevant parties.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, a special-use vehicles and highway components maker, announced its intention to buy the Hummer brand early this month, immediately drawing public ire.

"Buying a fuel-hungry and high-emission brand is directly against the current trend of energy saving and emission reduction," said Lu Zhongyuan, deputy director at the Development Research Center of the State Council, the country's cabinet, at a forum earlier this month.

But the little-known Tengzhong has repeatedly said that it has the financial resources and expertise to clinch the deal.

"We have the financial resources for the Hummer deal from our own sources and also funding from some financial institutions," its general manager Yang Yi said last week.

Both GM and Tengzhong have refused to disclose the financial terms of the deal, which has not been formally signed yet.

Analysts have estimated the deal size at between $100 million and $500 million.

Chinese website Sina.com reported yesterday that the two sides were planning to formally sign the deal on June 28, citing unnamed sources.

But a person with knowledge of the matter yesterday denied the same to China Daily saying, "such talk is groundless rumor".

The government is encouraging domestic firms to go abroad, while also stepping up its regulation of overseas acquisitions after some recent deals incurred losses.

Last week, the NDRC issued a notice requiring Chinese companies to report intended overseas acquisitions to the government before they sign any legally binding contracts.
