Al Jazeera English: The inequality that ate American democracy

"Ironically, this inequality gap is becoming deeply institutionalised at a time when America has its most nominally progressive president in decades. Barack Obama has spoken out against economic inequality but appears to lack the commitment or political means to reverse it.

The folks at Occupy Wall Street are no doubt saying, "I told you so", but even they may not appreciate how intractable the inequality is, and how it is fundamentally changing our society."

Rightrdia lost confidence in obama when he spent 15 months on the Affordable Health Care Act rather than fixing the tax system which was a big campaign promise. 

The Gini co-efficient for the US  is dangerously high at .46. Once the co-efficient reaches .50, social instability may result. the GINI index, has in fact increased while Obama was preidnet. 

The rise of the Tea party and OWS should be a wake-up call for both political parties. Watch for an increase in this sort of activity.

Mario Piperni: Republican spin on Occupy Wall Street

GOP spinmeister Frank Luntz

Frank Luntz, a biased Republican pollster, told a meeting of Republican Governors how deeply concerned he was about the impact Occupy Wall Street is having on political discourse and American’s view of capitalism. 

Imagine having people realize that capitalists don’t always have their best interests at heart. That would do serious damage to that ‘job creators’ image conservatives have so carefully crafted over the last while.

Luntz outlined his strategy on how conservatives should deal with the movement. Chris Moody has the full list.

• Don’t say ‘capitalism.’:  “I’m trying to get that word removed and we’re replacing it with either ‘economic freedom’ or ‘free market,’ ” Luntz said. “The public . . . still prefers capitalism to socialism, but they think capitalism is immoral. And if we’re seen as defenders of quote, Wall Street, end quote, we’ve got a problem.”
• Don’t say ‘tax the rich’:  “If you talk about raising taxes on the rich,” the public responds favorably, Luntz cautioned. But  ”if you talk about government taking the money from hardworking Americans, the public says no. Taxing, the public will say yes.”
• Don’t say ‘middle class’:  “They cannot win if the fight is on hardworking taxpayers. We can say we defend the ‘middle class’ and the public will say, I’m not sure about that. But defending ‘hardworking taxpayers’ and Republicans have the advantage.”
• Don’t say ‘entrepreneur’:  “Use the phrases “small business owners” and “job creators” instead of “entrepreneurs” and “innovators.”
• Blame Washington for everything:  Tell them, “You shouldn’t be occupying Wall Street, you should be occupying Washington. You should occupy the White House because it’s the policies over the past few years that have created this problem.”

Tea Party says Obama is repsonsble for Occupy movement

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says responsibility for the Occupy Wall Street movement rests squarely on the shoulders of President Obama.Giuliani said:


Barack Obama owns the Occupy Wall Street movement, it would not have happened but for his class warfare.

Rudy explained the Occupy Wall Street protests broke out in cities all over the country shortly after president Obama called for tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans.

The Republicans are confusing cause and effect. Less than one in four Occupiers is a Democrat. Most of them are independent.

This is what Wikipedia says about the Occupy movement:

The Occupy movement is an international protest movement which is primarily directed against economic and social inequality.The first Occupy protests to be widely covered were in Occupy Wall Street New York City and Occupy San Francisco, both taking place on September 17, 2011. Occupy Wall Street surveys show Democratic support but the demonstrators are independent

WASHINGTON -- More than one-third of the country supports the Wall Street protests. fifty eight per cent say they are furious about America's politics.


Americans who support the Wall Street protests, 

• 64 per cent in the poll are Democrats, 
• 22 per cent are independents
• 14 per cent are Republicans. 

The protest backers are more likely to approve of President Barack Obama and more likely to disapprove of Congress than people who do not support the Occupy Wall street protests. 


A Gawker study reported that most of the demonstrators are independents and we agree with the Zogby organization that most are unlikely to vote for Obama. 

• 27. per cent of respondents call themselves Democrats 
• 2.4 per cent  are Republican
• 70 per cent  call themselves independents

What the US may need is a progressive third party movement that is anti-corporatist and pro-jobs that advocates progressive tax reform and a more egalitarian American society. Such a movement could appeal to both progressive Democrats and independents that are disenchanted with the Democratic Party.

Perhaps the liberal version of the Tea Party movement would work. This might be able to steer the Democrats out of the muddled middle.

WMR: CIA informants inside Occupy Wall Street movement in NYC

In a page taken right out of the FBI's Counter-Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) and the CIA's domestic spying operations from the 1960s, a handful of long-time CIA operatives have been detected among the key leadership of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement in New York.

The CIA's penetration of OWS comes at the same time that a longtime CIA clandestine services officer, with field experience in Jordan and Pakistan, has been identified as a special assistant to the deputy commissioner of intelligence at the New York Police Department. 

The CIA agent has been assigned to his NYPD duties since July. The stationing of the CIA liaison officer at the NYPD has the approval of CIA director David Petraeus.

Two former CIA officers, David Cohen and Larry Sanchez, helped establish the NYPD's new intelligence division. Sanchez left the NYPD in 2010 while Cohen remains as the Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence. 

After retiring from the CIA but before taking his presenty job, Cohen worked for the "too-big-to-fail" American International Group (AIG), a company with longstanding links to the CIA, particularly in Asia.

This sounds like another abomination that the Patriot Act may allow. In the past, CIA agents could not conduct operations in the US unless foreign nationals were involved.

On Friday the Communications Workers of America and Occupy Wall Street will march against corporate greed at Verizon. The march begins at Freedom Plaza in New York City. Forty-five thousand workers are trying to bargain a fair contract at Verizon, which the CWA says is the poster child for corporate greed. James Burgund is with CWA Local 1109.

[Bergund]: “We're out here leafleting the Verizon wireless store. We believe that the working class are under attack nationwide. And we believe it's important to bring our message to the street and to the people and to the public and  let them know."

Verizon made $22.5 billion in profits over the last two years and got a $1.3 billion federal corporate income tax rebate. They still want to eliminate pensions, pile thousands of dollars in higher health care costs on workers, cut sick time and do away with job security.

Republicans suggest people who pay taxes are exclusively conservative

The occupy wall street slogan is “We are the 99 percent.” Now, conservatives who oppose the Wall Street protests are saying “We are the 53%.”

According to the Washington Post, the blog was  conceived by Redstate.org founder Erick Erickson. Erickson collaborated with the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Josh Trevino and conservative filmmaker Mike Wilson.

Conservatives are suggesting the  “Occupy Wall Street” protesters are not part of that 53 percent who pay federal income taxes.

Gawker wrote an article on the demographics of the wall street demonstrators. Gawker found:

They aren't a bunch of  kids. One-third of respondents is older than 35, and one-forth is 45 or older.

It's not all students and the educated elite. About 8 per cent have, at best, a high school degree. About a quarter are enrolled in school. Only about 10% are full-time students.

"Most are employed. Half of the respondents are already employed full-time, and an additional 20 per cent work part-time. Thirteen per cent are unemployed. 

"Tax the rich!" could hit close to home. About 30 per cent  earn between $50,000 and  $150,000.

Most are independent. The movement is often identified as a liberal and Democrat, but just 27 per cent of respondents call themselves Democrats. Seventy per cent call themselves independents.
