Why conservatives are historical revisionists

Speaking of a historical revisionist, Newt Gingrich comes to mind. 

Newt suggested the French Revolution was bad because French revolutionaries  attacked the Catholic Church. Of course, the French Revolution was stimulated by the American Revolution and the French fleet helped the colonists win the Revolutionary War. 

Republicans have also stated the Civil War was about State's rights while it was really fought over the decreasing power of the Southern states and the expansion of slavery into new US territories. 

Republicans have also suggested the Great Depression was caused by Democrats although three consecutive Republican  presidents preceded the Great Depression and the depression started during the Herbert Hoover presidency. 

Republicans have also tried to take credit for LBJ's Civil Rights Act of 1964, something a representative from Georgia recently wanted an exemption from.  

Considering the ALEC and GOP effort to make it harder to vote, Democrats would be stupid to allow Georgia to walk away from the Civil Rights Act that stopped Jim Crow laws in the South. These laws were designed to prevent blacks from voting.

Ron Paul: GW Bush was happy about 911

Ron Paul stopped in Ames, Iowa on the campaign trail on Thursday, and used some harsh words to explain President George W Bush’s reaction to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Specifically, the Texas congressman said that the former president was pretty happy about the events. After all, said Paul, the attacks served as pretext to finally put American troops overseas in what instantly became a justifiable reason for war.

“Think of what happened after 9/11,” Paul told a crowd of around 1,000 in Ames this week. “The minute before there was any assessment, there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq, and so the war drums beat.”

What’s more, said the presidential hopeful, is that a decade later, the current administration is creating excitement themselves over what is erupting with enemy forces overseas.

“That’s exactly what they’re doing now with Iran,” said Paul.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have been high for years, but talks of a budding nuclear program in Iran has America and its allies up in arms over what could be developing overseas. The loss of a high-tech American drone aircraft in Iran last week has only escalated a stand-off between nations, as Washington and Tehran bicker back in forth in the days since over what the craft was doing in the skies above Iran and whether or not Iran has actually recovered the craft.

Paul has been a critic of both the Bush and Obama administrations, but speaking from the campus of Iowa State this week, revealed that the excuses that each president has used to embroil American forces in overseas skirmishes are eerily similar. Paul added:

I think extremists have taken over. They’re the ones that run the foreign policy and that convinced us as a country to go along with all these wars.

From Ames on Thursday, the National Journal reports that Paul’s audience was unperturbed by the statement. A reporter with the paper relayed the statements to the rest of the world by way of Twitter, in which one critic in particular, however, shares sentiments about the libertarian-leaning GOP candidate. Former Bush administration official Ari Fleischer fired back at Paul’s statements, saying simply, “The man is nuts.”

Paul’s statements aren’t anything new for the libertarian icon, who has opposed the Bush administration’s reaction and response to 9/11 for some time. During a televised debate of Republican Party candidates earlier this year, Paul put the blame of the attacks on America itself. He said: 

They attacked us because we have been over there bombing them for 10 years . . .

If we think we can do that (occupy foreign lands) and not have retaliation, we are kidding ourselves.

RT: Chinese Yuan may replace dollar as world's reserve currency

Tensions between Beijing and Washington intensified this week as international leaders met to discuss the handling of the South China Sea. As America attempts to involve itself in the region, China is asking Obama and company to butt out.

And while once a force to be reckoned with, American dominance may be threatened more than ever as economists predict that the US dollar will be usurped by the Chinese yuan in only ten years’ time.

In its latest report to Congress, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission predicts that the yuan, also called the renminbi or RMB for short, could compete against the American dollar as the world’s reserve currency in a matter of only a decade. As China has pushed their currency outside of its own borders in recent time, the panel predicted to Congress that I could be just a matter of time before the US dollar loses its power as China becomes the world’s economic superpower.

"Chinese financial authorities are laying the groundwork for these ambitions via a series of bilateral arrangements with foreign companies and financial centers," the Commission says in their report. "While dollar-denominated financial markets retain a substantial advantage over their RMB-denominated counterparts in terms of new issuances, the RMB markets have made remarkable progress in less than one year," the add.

In his new book, Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance, economist Arvind Subramanian writes that that “Chinese economic dominance is more imminent and more broad-based – encompassing output, trade and currency – than is currently recognized.”

At one time the British pound sterling was the world's reserve currency but the dollar replaced it. Instability in US financial markets could make the Yuan attractive as an international currency.  


This would be a supreme irony if the currency of a communist nation was used as the world's reserve currency. 


The US would no longer be able to print money without creating inflation if this happened.

Sarah Palin supporters try to "fix" Wikipedia on the Paul Revere ride

Speaking of Wikipedia, Sarah Palin supports attempted to fudge the line in italics below in an unapproved revision:

Revere did not shout the phrase later attributed to him ("The British are coming!"), largely because the mission depended on secrecy and the countryside was filled with British army patrols; also, most colonial residents at the time considered themselves British as they were all legally British subjects.

That revision was deleted with the explanation "content not backed by a reliable sources. The Palin supporters attempted to use the Sarah Palin interview videos as sources.

Celebrate: It's Black History Month

America has a black president, wonderful black athletes, musicians and artists, generals, statesmen and numerous black personalties in radio and TV.

We even have blacks who are conservative. 

American would be a drab and monochromatic place without our blacks.

Newsy: How to rebuild Haiti

The St. Petersburg times wrote an excellent article on the history of Haiti. The US has spectacularly interfered with the nation  since the Haitians rebelled from their French colonials masters. At that time Haiti was hell on earth.

The French were making huge profits in forestry and sugar off the backs of black slaves. The French had to import 500,000 new slaves every year to replace the black people who preished in Haiti.

When the Haitian Revolution succeeded, the Southern slave states became highly alarmed about the world's first black republic in 1804. The United States refused to recognize the new nation for fear of undermining its own slavery system. The US led a worldwide boycott against Haiti that lasted until the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1865.

Concerned about risks to the Panama Canal,  the US occupied the entire island of Hispaniola during World War I. In the Dominican Republic (DR), Americans trained an army headed by Rafael Trujillo, who became president and then dictator of the DR.

The Haitians had their own dictator, Papa Doc Duvalier. U.S. economic and military aid — along with American manufacturers drawn to Haiti by cheap wages — helped keep Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude (Baby Doc), in power for nearly three decades.

But the regime's downfall began in the early '80s when the United States insisted that Haiti destroy its entire pig crop after an outbreak of swine flu.

That threw thousands of pig farmers out of work and started an uprising that led to "Baby Doc's'' exile to Paris in 1986.The US sent a C-141 to Port au Prince to evacuate the dictator to France. The C-141 also transported five heavy trunks for the Duvalier family.

Haiti no longer even produces its own food which it was able to do prior to 1950. The International Monetary Fund persuaded it to reduce import tariffs in the '80s, U.S. rice poured into the country and put many rice farms out of business. Today, three-fourths of Haiti's rice comes from the United States.

What could be done to improve the situation in Haiti. First, the country should follow the model of Costa Rica, one of the best government is the world and get rid of the Armed Forces. This would prevent coups that have plagued the nation. 

Jean-Bertrand Aristide was one of the better leaders of Haiti. Under Aristide's leadership, his party implemented many major reforms. These included greatly increasing access to health care and education for the general population, increasing adult literacy, increased protections for those accused of crimes, improved training for judges, prohibiting human trafficking, and disbanding the Haitian military, which had primarily been used against the Haitian people.

Aristride  also improved human rights and political freedoms, doubled the minimum wage, instituted land reform and assistance to small farmers, provided boat construction training to fishermen, established a food distribution network to provide low cost food to the poor at below market prices, built low cost housing, and attempted to reduce the level of government corruption.

However, there were also a lot of a corruption that included wire transfers to fictitious companies, corruption, nepotism and drug trade during his regime.

Retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter worried about lack of civics knowledge

Rightardia comments: In Florida, students may graduate without World History, or without American Government (civics) or Economics.  This happened under the watch of former Governor Jeb Bush.

In other schools history and civics classes are being eliminated to pay for computer technology. Is this part of right wing strategy to keep high school graduates ignorant about the US law and history that is not kind to the GOP?

This may be a strategy the GOP is using in school system to produce more slack jawed ditto heads. Beware of Republicans who call themselves education politicians. 

The GOP advocated the private enterprise Edison schools that produced mediocre results. Republicans advocated merit pay for teachers and many of the Florida teachers that received it were the first to be laid off due to budgetary problems.

Beware of Republicans bearing gifts for education. The GOP made a sorry mess of education in Florida. Republicans are opposed to the concept of a 'liberal' education for students.

Florida has a strong Democratic contender for the next gubernatorial race, Alex Sink. It will take a Democrat to fix Florida public education.

Retired Supreme Court Justice David Souter decried a "dangerous state of civic knowledge" in America. He stated a lack of proper civics education poses a threat to judicial independence.

"We know from survey results that two-thirds of people in the United States cannot even name all three branches of the national government," Souter said at the opening assembly of the American Bar Association's annual meeting.

Souter learned about government by sitting in on meetings in the rectangular Town Hall of Weare, N.H. as a youth. "If anyone had put the question to one of my 9th-grade classmates or to me -- what are the three branches of government? -- none of us would have failed to answer," stated Souter.

His written opinions were rarely quotable or controversial, but he was respected by many as a careful and curious judge, a man known for a spartan lifestyle and an aversion to the trappings of technology.

After retiring, Souter began working with the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society task force to improve civics education in the state's public schools.

Souter believes that a public poorly educated about government can't possibly respect the importance of an independent judiciary.

"We must revive the basic civic knowledge that once came naturally to a teenage boy in a small town," he said.
