WIN: Collective Passivity

A new book titled “Get Up, Stand Up: Uniting Populists, Energizing the Defeated, and Battling the Corporate Elite” looks at what author Bruce Levine calls “political passivity.” 

Levine says that while the majority of Americans disagree with Wall Street bailouts and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they remain passive due to years of US institutions creating a sense of helplessness. 

Levine said what’s unfolding in Wisconsin shows that collective self respect can change the passive trend.

Levine wrote: 

Once one person shows some courage it’ll catch on. it is infectious, it is contagious. That’s what happened there in Madison, Wisconsin and people throughout the country are an example that people aren’t completely dead yet, aren’t completely demoralized. If people get hit hard enough, which those public sector workers in Wisconsin definitely did, these guys are willing to make all kinds of sacrifices, but it wasn’t good enough...

...it was enough a spark to get people to do something.

Health reform celebration in Central Florida

Rigtardia sent a staffer to the health reform celebration in Clearwater. The event was sponsored by Organizing for America (OFA), the Obama political organization. It was a great event. About  100 to 150 people attended and everyone was polite and upbeat.

Most of the attendees had posters and waved to people who were traveling between Tampa and Clearwater on the Courtney Campbell causeway. The local ABC News station (WFTS, Tampa) sent a mobile team to cover the event.

A lot of the passers-bys tooted their horns and gave the 'thumbs up approval sign. We got a few fingers, too, and thumbs down signs, but they were the exception rather than the rule.

Compared to the Tea Partier crowds we have observed, the people in the group were younger and more diverse.  There were a lot of discussions going on about health care during the celebration.  

One of the attendees indicated that Tea Partiers will never need to worry about death panels because they are already 'brain dead."

The Democratic crowd also signed a big thank you card to President Obama. Equal thanks are due to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority leader Harry Reid.

It was heartening to see a political rally in which people were not rude and shouting obscenities. The Republican have their anarchic Tea Partiers, but Democrats are the "Hearty Party."  We want more Americans to have health care so they will live longer like our Canadian and European counterparts who have had a national health care system for years.

Rightardia predicts both the infant mortality rate and the abortion statistics will be lowered because of the new health care law. A woman who is pregnant will now know that her child will be able to get health care.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Rightardia comment: Obama has activated his political organization, Organizing for America. A lot can change in the next year and the Democrats have resiliency. A recent Gallup Poll also indicates that Republicans in Congress have a 13 per cent approval rating. Democrats in Congress have a 55 per cent approval rating. Independents represented by Blue Dog Democrats aren't much better than the GOP at 22 per cent.

If a dimwit like George Bush could gain congressional seats in the 2002 elections, the Democrats should be able to as well. If there is a will, there is a way. A lot will depend on how the Democrats handle health care.

The Democrats do have a nuclear keep it simple stupid option. Extend Medicare to other Americans. We have CHIPS, S-CHIPS, and Medicaid. All could be rolled into a single unified program and additional age groups could be phased in over time.

Some of the most prominent and respected handicappers predict an election in which Democrats suffer double-digit losses in the House. this will not be enough to provide the 40 seats necessary to return the GOP to power.

Top political analyst Charlie Cook wrote that “the situation this summer has slipped completely out of control for President Obama and congressional Democrats.”

"Many veteran congressional election watchers, including Democratic ones, report an eerie sense of déjà vu. The chances of Democratic losses going higher than 20 seats is just as good as the chances of Democratic losses going lower than 20 seats.

At the mid-August Netroots Nation convention, Nate Silver, a Democratic analyst whose uncannily accurate, stat-driven predictions have made his website 538.com predicted that Republicans will win between 20 and 50 seats next year. He further alarmed an audience of progressive activists by arguing that the GOP has between a 25 and 33 percent chance of winning back control of the House.

“A lot of Democratic freshmen and sophomores will be running in a much tougher environment than in 2006 and 2008 and some will adapt to it, but a lot of others will inevitably freak out and end up losing,” Silver told POLITICO. “Complacency is another factor: We have volunteers who worked really hard in 2006 and in 2008 for Obama but it’s less compelling [for them] to preserve the majority.”

Organizing for America is back!

The Republicans fired the first shots. Let's finish them off now that  Obama's politcal organization, Organizing for America, has been reactivated. Let's rout those Astroturfers, Tea Baggers, Birthers and Deathers. We beat them in 2008 and we will beat them again.

Congress is about to head back to D.C. to make historic decisions about health insurance reform. This is our last, best chance to take a stand while their attention is focused back home.

So we're organizing "Health Insurance Reform Now" events all around the country to show the overwhelming support for reform.

These events will be watched closely by Congress and the media to gauge just how strongly voters feel about reform -- and every extra person who shows up will make a strong, public case for change.

Reform Supporters Outnumber Critics At Town Halls

While television cameras have focused on vocal opponents to health care reform, in many cases they have been outnumbered by supporters of the legislation in general and a public option in particular.

In Phoenix, Arizona, "Pro-Obama demonstrators appeared to outnumber the anti-Obama ones, with Phoenix police estimating the crowd at 1,200 to 2,000 at locations around the convention center."

In Boulder, Colorado, "a few hundred residents of one of the nation's more liberal congressional districts turned out Monday night to tell their congressman, Democratic Rep. Jared Polis, to keep that public option,in the final bill."

"It's the most essential part of the bill," said Leigh Kirkland. This was a direct response to Sunday's statement from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that the public option "wasn't the most essential" part of the reform package.

Obama going after Blue Dog Democrats in key Democratic Districts

Barack Obama's campaign arm is expanding its health care ad buy into the districts of key conservative House Democrats.

Late Friday night Organizing for America and the Democratic National Committee announced the expansion of the "It's Time" ad purchase, which uses personal stories of health care struggles to drive home the need for reform. The initial purchase was on national cable and in eight states with critical Democratic and moderate Republican Senators.

Now the scope of the campaign is expanding. The ad will appear in the media markets that corespond with 15 congressional districts of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Eleven of those districts belong to Democrats, including Rep. Zack Space (Ohio), Rep. John Barrow (Georgia), Rep. Jay Inslee (Washington), Rep. Mike Ross (Arkansas), Rep. Bart Gordon (Tennessee), Rep. Baron Hill (Indiana), Rep. Charlie Melancon (Louisiana), Rep. Mike Doyle (Pennsylvania), Rep. Jim Matheson (Utah), Rep. Bart Stupak (Michigan), and Rep. Jerry McNerney (California).

The four Republican districts belong to Rep. Fred Upton (Michigan), Rep. Mary Bono Mack (California), and Rep. Greg Walden (Oregon), Rep. Sue Myrick (North Carolina),
