There is potential for war between Colombia and Venezuela because the government are polar opposites. Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is a socialist and Álvaro Uribe of Colombia is a fascist.
However, Colombia greatly outspends Venezuela on defense although the GDP of the two counties is similar. Rightardia has doubts that Venezuela could win a war against Columbia even with an influx of Russian tanks, aircraft, missiles and small arms.

Wolfram Alpha: Comparison of Columbian and Venezuelan Armed Forces
It is easy to see why Hugo Chavez is concerned about bolstering his armed forces up. Columbian outspends Venezuela on defense by more than two times and the US is increasing the presence of its military in Columbia.

Outrage over US policy in Latin America
US policy seems to be sending shock waves throughout Latin America. The United States has a deal with Colombia to escalate its military presence in the country, and this is not going over too well with South American leaders.
Rightardia would expect Hugo Chavez to buy more arms from Russia in response. Venezuela may purchase T-72 tanks from Russia.

UNASUR to grill Colombia on US plan
South American leaders will debate a controversial Colombia-U.S. military deal during a regional summit. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) will probably oppose an increase in the US forces in Colombia.
Venezuela has a leftist government that has nationlized the oil industry. Colombia has a right wing government that suppresses labor unions. Many labor leaders have been assassinated by right wing Colombian death squads.
Venezuela has been talking to Russia about purchasing T-72 or T-90 tanks. The Russian fleet has visited Caracas and Russian bombers have also flown into Venezuela. There is the potential for a war between Colombia and Venezuela.
The US should be careful in Columbia and try to avoid more South American conflicts such as the CIA created in South America during the Reagan presidency.
