UNASUR to grill Colombia on US plan

South American leaders will debate a controversial Colombia-U.S. military deal during a regional summit. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) will probably oppose an increase in the US forces in Colombia.

Venezuela has a leftist government that has nationlized the oil industry. Colombia has a right wing government that suppresses labor unions. Many labor leaders have been assassinated by right wing Colombian death squads.

Venezuela has been talking to Russia about purchasing T-72 or T-90 tanks. The Russian fleet has visited Caracas and Russian bombers have also flown into Venezuela. There is the potential for a war between Colombia and Venezuela.

The US should be careful in Columbia and try to avoid more South American conflicts such as the CIA created in South America during the Reagan presidency.
