MA GOP Senatorial candidate voted against assistance for 9/11 workers

Submitted by Jesse Russell on January 17, 2010 - 5:14pm

Tomorrow Massachusetts will go to the polls to choose a successor for the seat left empty when Senator Edward Kennedy passed away last year. Kennedy served as a Senator to the state for 46 years.

One of the candidates vying for the seat is Republican Scott Brown. Brown came under fire this weekend over a vote he cast in October of 2001 against a Massachusetts bill that would have provided financial assistance to Red Cross workers who volunteered to work at the Ground Zero site after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Brown was one of only three Massachusetts State Representatives to vote against the bill. Think Progress.com caught up with Brown on Saturday to ask if he had any regrets about not voting for the bill. Brown said he didn’t:

Brown: “It was a time when our budget was down. We had a lot of cuts unfortunately, and we had to take care of our own priorities first.”

Even nearly a decade after the events of September 11 numerous volunteers and workers who assisted at the World Trade Center recovery site continue to experience respiratory issues and other health issues with many receiving little to no aid from the government.

Rightardia checked Intrade Predictive Markets today and it it predicting Brown will win.  Brown has a 63 per cent probability of winning. How did the Democrats let this one get away?

Latest polls show Coakley Up in MA

 by Laura Clawson

Thu Jan 14, 2010 at 01:25:25 PM PST

Research 2000 for Blue Mass Group. 1/12-13. Likely voters. MOE 4%.

Martha Coakley (D) 49%
Scott Brown (R) 41%

A look at Pollster.com shows significant consistency in Coakley's numbers -- over the past 10 days polls have put her between 47% and 53%, and this is obviously no exception. Brown's numbers have bounced around more, from 36% to 48%, with the last two public (as opposed to internal) polls putting him at the top of that range. Hopefully this will be the first of a string of polls in which Brown's numbers return to earth.

At Blue Mass Group, David points out that
Particularly interesting in these numbers is the breakdown of unenrolled (independent) voters. Brown is ahead in that group 49-36; significant, to be sure, but not the overwhelming advantage suggested in the Rasmussen (71-23) and PPP (63-31) polls that came out recently.
Intrade Predictive Markets also has its money on Coakley. They give her a 79 per cent probability of winning.

Intrade predicts Coakley to win Massachusetts Special Election. Her opponent had  a profanity laced meltdown in a school that likely ended any chances he had.

Politics Daily: Democrat Coakley Opens Big Lead in Massachusetts Senate Race

Posted: 01/10/10

Democrat Martha Coakley is leading Republican Scott Brown by 50 percent to 35 percent in the race to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, according to a Boston Globe poll of likely voters conducted Jan. 2-6.
Nine percent are undecided and 5 percent are supporting an independent candidate. The results contradict two recent polls that had the race closer or tied.

The special election matching up Coakley, the state's attorney general, and Brown, a state senator, is scheduled for Jan. 19.

The Globe said that when undecided voters who are leaning one way or another are added to the mix, Coakley's lead grows to 53 percent to 36 percent. Nearly two-thirds of Brown's supporters believe the Democrat will win.

A Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 4 had a single digit lead. A Public Policy Polling survey conducted Jan. 7-9 had the two candidates  statistically tied.

Some Republicans were hoping that Scott Brown would win this race which could torpedo Democratic health care reform.
