Marco Rubio gets jiggly on climate change

In an interview with the TamapTribune,  Rubio called Crist "a believer in man-made global warming."

"I don't think there's the scientific evidence to justify it," Rubio said.

There is an overwhelming consensus in the scientific community that climate change is man made.

Texas tornado trashes truckstop

Rightardia wonders if the global warming deniers who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth are wondering if God is punishing them for their insolence.

Dallas-Ft. Worth is the capital of the energy industry that wants to continue US subsidies of gas and oil and also side step Cap 'n Trade taxes.

The main tact of these deniers is to claim that global warming is an unscientific fraud or global warming is caused by the sun.

What an original idea.

Rightardia doesn't believe tornadoes occur because God is punishing someone. We have always taken a skeptical view of such ideas.

Scientists have been predicting that global warming would cause more severe weather in the US. The irony is that Dallas-Ft. worth got a piece of this severe weather action.

Is this poetic justice or that fuzzy Buddhist concept: karma?

Not really! We don't think truckers are behind the cabal to deny global warming.

Pavlovian Obeisance: Global warming factoid

Rightardia has pointed out that long term climate change and weather are apples and oranges.

As the graphic points out global warming will cause more extreme weather in the summer and winter.

Long term climate changes show that the Earth is, in fact, experiencing higher average temperatures.

But the wingers don't want to pay taxes to solve the problem, so they just deny global warming is a problem.

These will be the same people who will ask the federal government to provide assistance when their beach front home is damaged or flooded during a hurricane.

Science Daily: Climatic Fluctuations in Last 2,500 Years Linked to Social Upheavals

 
ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2011) — There are striking chronological parallels between significant variations of climate and major historical epochs, such as the Migration Period and the heyday of the Middle Ages.

This is the conclusion reached following a study undertaken by researchers from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the USA, in which they were able to reconstruct the summer climate in Europe over the last 2,500 years from the information provided by annual tree rings.

This is interesting because there has been a lot of social and economic upheaval in Europe: Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland and now in the Middle East. We also have a financial and real estate collapse in the US.

The entire planet is facing a global warming crises.

Greenhouse emisions in glowing color in the US

A new, high resolution, interactive map of United States carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels has found that the emissions aren't all where we thought.

The maps and system, called Vulcan, show CO2 emissions at more than 100 times more detail than was available before.

Until now, data on carbon dioxide emissions were reported, in the best cases, monthly at the level of an entire state grid.

The Vulcan model examines CO2 emissions at local levels on an hourly basis. Purdue researchers say the maps are also more accurate than previous data because they are based on greenhouse gas emissions instead of estimates based on population in areas of the United States.

We wonder how the global warming deniers will try to discredit this video?

What the future may bring: fire tornadoes

The right wing loves to mix up weather with climate change.

A cold spell in the mid-West means global warming is a hoax according to many conservatives.

However, the Australians  experienced a record drought.  And so have the Russians who have been fighting massive wild fires.

If it got really hot, we might even get a fire tornado. Oh, that could never happen!

ONN: Evangelicals want Bibical Armageddon taught with Global Warming

Christian Groups: Biblical Armageddon Must Be Taught Alongside Global Warming

Despite opposition from some of their colleagues, 86 evangelical Christian leaders have decided to back a major initiative to fight global warming, saying "millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors."

Among signers of the statement, which will be released in Washington on Wednesday, are the presidents of 39 evangelical colleges and pastors of megachurches, including Rick Warran, author of the best seller "The Porpoise-Driven Life."

The group's statement said. "Many of us have required considerable convincing before becoming persuaded that climate change is a real problem and that it ought to matter to  Christians. But now we have seen and heard enough because we know Armageddon is even a bigger threat. Christians need to prepare for the rapture."

The statement calls for federal legislation that would require Armageddon to be taught alongside global warming in high school classrooms around the nation. This appeals to  evangelicals, who tend to be pro-business.

Greepeace Obama ad

The ad depicts Obama as an old man saying he is sorry for not stopping catastrophic climate change. There may be the ring of truth here. Rightardia doubts if Obama or even superman could stop global warming without the cooperation of most of the nations of the world.

One of Obama's big problems is that a lot of people have high expectations for him. He will never all things for all people. If he were the center left's Messiah, the US would have gotten the Olympics in Chicago, now wouldn't we.

Obama's number one problem is the US economy, not an international issue like global warming. Certainly, the US is one of the big causes of global warming being the number one producer of green house gases for decades until recently.

Conservatives want to stick their heads and sand about global warming because a tax will be required to fix the problem. Their heads will pop out of the sand once their beach front homes get flooded. The affluent will be the first to ask the government for help when the US coasts start rising. Most of the beach replenishment in the US benefits the wealthiest Americans.

Just the melt from Antarctica is expected to raise the sea levels one meter by the end of the century.

Al Jazeera: Earth in 'hottest decade on record'

The earth is suffering its hottest decade on record, according to the UN's weather agency during the second day of climate talks in Copenhagen.

Warning that 2009 was also the fifth warmest year since records began, the World Meteorogical Organisation report will increase pressure on policital leaders to accept the changes needed to reduce emissions and slow global warming.

Michel Jarraud, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organisation, said the decade to 2009 is "very likely to be the warmest on record, warmer than the 1990s, which were in turn warmer than the 1980s".

Speaking in the Danish capital on Tuesday, Jarraud added that the year 2009 would probably rank as the fifth warmest since accurate records were started in 1850.

According to Nasa, the US space agency, the other warmest years since 1850, when records began, have been 2005, 1998, 2007 and 2006.

The data was released as negotiators at the two-week summit worked to craft a global deal to tackle climate change.

US emissions move

The Copenhagen talks, under the banner of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), are aimed at outlining an agreement that sets down pledges by major emitters of greenhouse gases to curb pollution.

On Monday the US government boosted talks by saying it would start to regulate carbon dioxide as a dangerous pollutant.

The move means Barack Obama, the US president, can sidestep congress to order cuts in emissions.

The announcement by the US Environmental Protection Agency (Epa) was clearly timed to build momentum towards an agreement at the international conference on climate change.

Environmentalists hailed Monday's announcement and welcomed the timing, saying it will help the US president convince delegates at the Copenhagen conference that the US is serious about addressing the problem.

The conference is also hoping to set down the principles of long-term financing to help wean poor countries off high-carbon technology and bolster their defences against climate change.

Once ratified, the accord would take effect from 2013.

Delegates said the next few days would see countries lay out their positions before some 110 world leaders, including Obama, China's Wen Jiabao and India's Manmohan Singh, arrive for the climax.

Kilimanjaro may become snowless by 2022

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The snows of Kilimanjaro, famous for an Ernest Hemingway's short story of the same name, could disappear by 2022.  This is according to a new study published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

For the first time in almost 12,000 years, based on ice-core analysis, Africa's highest peak probably will be ice-free as early as 2022 or as late as 2033, said glaciologist Lonnie Thompson of Ohio State University.

"Of the ice cover present in 1912," Thompson and his colleagues write in the paper, "85 percent has disappeared and 26 percent of that present in 2000 is now gone."

However, researchers studying the mountaintop, including those involved in this study, differ in their conclusions on how much of the melting could result from human activity or other climatological influences.

Some studies have suggested the ice loss is due primarily to what some see as local factors: less snowfall and more sublimation -- a process that turns ice directly into water vapor at below freezing temperatures.

The new study appears to strengthen the argument that global warming is to blame in addition to sublimation.

"This is a very thorough documentation of the changes in the Kilimanjaro glaciers," says Kevin Trenberth, head of the climate analysis section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., who was not part of the study. Trenberth says he has no doubt "that the glaciers are retreating and have continued to retreat."

The "snows of Kilimanjaro" were made famous in the Ernest Hemingway short story of that name in 1938, in which the main character notices "as wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Kilimanjaro."
