Class warfare and the middle class: history or the top tax rate.

This Politico M. Weurker cartoon gives you a historical perspective on top tax rates and the primary reason runaway deficits started when Ronny Raygun was president.

Keep in mind that both Reagan and GW Bush also greatly increased defense spending. GW Bush also started two wars without increasing taxes, the only president with that distinction. .

Because Mittens won't raise taxes on the affluent, he would be unable to balance the budget without draconian budget cuts or tax increases on the middle class.

Mittens will probably not change the tax tables to create the impression he is not increasing taxes. He will eliminate deductions such as the home mortgage deduction, which will have the same effect.

GOP tax policies are a form of class warfare that has weakened this country and the middle calls and created the potential for the US to become a banana republic.

The American lottery effect

Many Americans accept class warfare when it directed against the poor and minorities, but buy into the class warfare arguments of Karl Rove when the tax perks and excesses of the affluent are examined.

Part of the problem is what Rightardia calls the lottery effect. Many Americans think they can be millionaires and as they grow older and their chances diminish, they play the lottery to achieve the American dream.

According to Wikipedia, the percentage of Americans who are millionaires is 0.15571 %. 


This means the odds of becoming a millionaire area less than 1:50. When you factor in education, the odds are even greater. According  to Forrester Research, only 20% of America's millionaires never attended college. 


This means approximately 1 in 250 people who never went to college might become a millionaire. That is pretty slim odds. 


Yet the improbable dream persists. The majority of Americans, roughly two of three, would like to be rich. 


Of course, how do you define rich  Many would define it by their circle of friends and family. Jesus would probably define it by the one's readiness for the Kingdom of God. 


Jesus said:

how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Oddly, many fundamentalist Christians seems to ignore Jesus' words on affluence and talk about Christian prosperity.

Mittens is uniformed about drug testing welfare recipients

The drug testing for welfare recipients is certainly a form of class warfare.

Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) started to test welfare recipients and less than 5 per cent of those tested failed. A federal judge halted the program because she indicated the program was not cost effective and that it violated Forth Amendment rights.

This is more right wing social engineering. The poor have a tough enough time as it it. They don't need to be harassed further.

Well, Gov. Scott and Mittens are both 1 per centers. What did you expect?

Many Americans are confused about taxes

We are not surprised that so-called "Democrats" on a Fox News panel would buy into class warfare tax augments.

First of all, the idea of progressive income tax tables was advocated by Theodore Roosevelt, a progressive Republican.Most of the countries of the industrial world use such a tax system for income tax.

Second, most US taxes are flat or regressive. This includes both municipal and state property and sales taxes. Income tax is one of the few progressive taxes in the US.

Alf Franken said this about class warfare.

In her book A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous Fourteenth Century, Barbara Tuchman writes about a peasant revolt in 1358 that began in the village of St. Leu and spread throughout the Oise Valley. At one estate, the serfs sacked the manor house, killed the knight, and roasted him on a spit in front of his wife and kids. Then, after ten or twelve peasants violated the lady, with the children still watching, they forced her to eat the roasted flesh of her dead husband and then killed her.

That is class warfare.

Arguing over the optimum marginal tax rate for the top one percent is not.

In addition, Democratic tax plan will probably raise the marginal tax rate for Americans making more than $250,000 per year. These folks are not small business people. According to Chron:

Those with more than 10 years experience, on the other hand, earn upwards of $105,757 per year.

Likewise, the top marginal tax rate has become too low and it is probably the main reason that the US has the fifth most unequal income distribution in the world. We have a worse income distribution than Americans had in the Guilded age prior to the Great Depression.

After world War 2, the top tax rate was 90 per cent. JFK dropped the rate to 70 per cent. Ronald Reagan dropped the top rate to 50 per cent in 1981 and then 28 per cent in 1986. This created a huge revenue problem for the Reagan administration who had to raise taxes 11 times to counter the losses. 

It was also the beginning o the era of deficit politics and big increases to the national debt. 

Almost all of the GOP candidates have a tax plan such as the Herman Cain's 9-9-9 plan or Newt Gingrich's 15 per cent flat tax. 

The Romney tax plan would eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains for taxpayers who make less than $200,000. It also calls for the elimination of the estate tax, and a reduction in the tax rate paid by corporations from 35% to 25%. He also wants to flatten the income tax table. 

Obama wants to rescind the Bush tax cuts if reelected and raise the capital gains tax to 30 per cent. This tax is now 15 per cent which is the reason Mittens paid approximately 15 percent on his 2011 return and 13.9 per cent the previous year. 

The  .001 per centers like Mittens don't work. They clip coupons and mail them in for quarterly stock dividends  that are taxed at a paltry 15 per cent. 

If you want to make the argument that changing the tax tables or US taxation system is class warfare, the GOP are masters of it. The US now has one of the lowest income tax rates of the industrial nations.

However, these wayward tax changes have greatly increased the national debt and also fractured the middle calls which has been shrinking since the era of Reaganomics.

Al Jazeera: Newt should try the Food Stamp diet

AAl Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports from Washington.

Newt Gingrich, a candidate for the Republican nomination to be president of the US, is under attack for comments he has made this week about African Americans and government benefits for the poor, called food stamps.

Critics say the comments were racially charged, and that other Republican candidates have made similar comments while on the campaign trail.

Republicans have used class and racial warfare to their advantage for years. Their view is the problems in America are caused by the poor, in particular blacks, Rightardia would contend that the economic system which has produced a nation increasingly of "have mores" and "have nots" has caused most of what now ails America.

The strategy of the GOP is get to get the Middle Class to focus on the cost of welfare for the poor and disadvantaged so they do not pay attention to the most affluent Americans, in particular, the one per cent.

The poor are an effect of crony capitalism in which CE0's now make 300 times what the average worker makes. Programs like Food Stamps are essential to the poor are are also the most stimulative of government programs.

This Mark Zandi table from Moody's Analytics makes this clear.

The reason so many people are on food stamps is because they have lost their jobs, not because these people are lazy or members of a minority

Food stamps are a meager benefit. The typical recipient gets about $4.50 per day for food. A California congressperson tried the food stamp diet and she was hungry all the time.

As a historian, Gingrich should also know that food riots have toppled a lot of governments. Some historians believe the European Renaissance and other revolutions were caused by the Little Ice Age in the 16th and 19th centuries that produced an extremely cold climate in Europe. 


Marie Antoinette lost her head shortly after food riots started in France. A Great princess who was probably not Marie Antoinette muttered these words:


"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche." (Let them eat cake.)

Many people emigrated to the US to escape the hunger, debt and misery of Europe.

Newt should try the food stamp diet. He could certainly lose 40 pounds.

Rightrdia's advice to Republicans is too shut up about food stamps. There are more honest ways to pander for votes.

Fact Check: Republican class warfare to divide the middle class continues

The Crossroads GPS ad is designed to create dissension in the middle class and among neighbours. Unions are not a factor in the present economic crises. The ads, which try to create animosoty toward public workers or unions, are a form of class warfare.

The GPS Crossroads ads are particularity misleading and are expected to run nationally on the air shortly. 

Crossroads GPS greatly exaggerates the earnings of unionized government workers in a new TV ad attacking unions and Democrats, including President Obama.

The ad claims that government workers who belong to unions are paid "42 percent more than non-union workers."  But the very study cited by the ad says the gap is only 10 percent, once geographic differences are accounted for.

The 60-second spot was launched March 9 and is set to run nationally on CNN, CNBC and Fox News, according to a Crossroads GPS news release. The group said it would spend $750,000 to run the ad for one week. The ad is titled "The System."

In the ad, the narrator says Democrats are "shutting down state capitals … to protect a system that pays unionized government workers 42 percent more than non-union workers." On screen, the ad cites a Cato Institute study released last year.

It’s true that the Cato study was highly critical of public sector unions, and it contained a table showing that unionized workers in 2009 got total compensation (salary plus benefits) that was 142 percent of total compensation for non-union workers.

But that was a national average, and as the study immediately makes clear, that 42 percent gap is not all or even mostly a result of the "system," as this ad claims. It’s a result of geography.

Here’s what the Cato study actually says:

Cato Institute, March 2010: [P]art of this union-nonunion pay difference stems from general labor market variations across states. States with generally higher wages tend to be more unionized. Analyses that hold constant such cross-state differences find that public-sector unions increase average pay levels by roughly 10 percent.

Context, Please

Other parts of the ad could benefit from added context. It starts by questioning an inflammatory remark made by Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano of Massachusetts at a gathering of Boston union members on Feb. 22. It shows a clip of the congressman saying, "you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary."

It’s true Capuano said that — but also true that he apologized for that remark the very next day. He issued a statement saying:

Rep. Capuano: I strongly believe in standing up for worker rights and my passion for preserving those rights may have gotten the best of me yesterday in an unscripted speech. I wish I had used different language to express my passion and I regret my choice of words.

Crossroads GPS accepts donations from business corporations and individuals.

Though it does not disclose the identities of its donors, its political director, Carl Forti, says it raised and spent a total of $70 million during the 2010 elections in concert with its sister organization, American Crossroads. The two groups say they plan to raise $120 million for the 2012 elections.

Rasmussen Poll bad news for Gov. Scott Walker

Newsmax sent me an email saying Rasmussen poll found that 60 percent of Wisconsin voters “disapprove” of Gov. Walker and 48 percent “strongly disapprove” of Gov. Walker.

Why is this according to NewsMax? Why, it's the unrelenting attacks from the liberal media!

A more accurate answer would be that the GOP thought they could play the class warfare card against government workers and lost the battle.

The GOP would be smart to take their losses and withdraw. The Madison uprising could energise a union movement across the nation. An increase in union strength is essential to a strong middle class.

Everyone knows we need to cut spending and reduce the deficit, but Republicans across the country are now taking heat for their bad budget choices. 

The Republicans want the middle class to sacrifice while protecting taxpayer funding for special interests like Big Oil. 

The closer American families look at the priorities in the Republican Continuing Resolution, the more they find the wrong choices.

Fermi director: Cuts will cost U.S. 'Sputnik moment' [Kane County Chronicle]
“If the House Republicans’ proposed budget cuts to the Office of Science are realized, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory would have 400 layoffs – 20 percent of staff – shut down all accelerators immediately, stop buying materials and delay projects, director Pier Oddone said.”  [Kane County Chronicle, 2/18/11]

How Republican budget cuts would affect California [Los Angeles Times]
“University of California students would take a nearly $55-million hit from reductions in Pell grants.

A $20-million check promised for bringing a rail line closer to the L.A. airport would be taken back. Head Start cuts would eliminate about 14,000 slots for low-income children in California. [… ]

Democrats said the massive cuts would set back the nation's economic recovery and weaken the safety net for the needy and unemployed. Crooks and Liars: Riot Police protect Billionaires at Rancho Mirage

This is live video sent back from the Quarantine at the the Kochs rally in Rancho Mirage about an hour and a half ago.

There are about 1500 people or so there, peacefully protesting the convocation of billionaires at the Rancho Las Palmas resort.

The purpose of the meeting is to figure out how to impeach Obama and take over the government in order to preserve their wealth, justice, and liberty at the expense of the middle class. 

This is class warfare at its finest. 

Glenn Beck was the keynote speaker last night, and Eric Cantor was also on the guest list. (Full list here (PDF)).

The pdf is a hoot. These billionaires think they are protecting "American Properity."

Scores of riot police guarding the driveways into the resort. At least 25 people have been arrested.
