First look at Russian S-400 (SA-21 Growler) SAM defense system

In August 2007, a battalion in Elektrostal near Moscow became the first military unit to receive S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) surface-to-air missile systems after official state acceptance. These SAMs have been guarding Moscow Region air space ever since.

The S-300 is the system that the Russians plan to sell to Iran and Venezuela.

The S-400 Triumf (Russian: C-400 is a new generation air defense system developed by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.

The S-400's NATO reporting name is SA-21 Growler, and the system was previously known as S-300PMU-3. It overshadows the capabilities of the other systems from the S-300 series, and its range is claimed to be at least two times the MIM-104 Patriot system's.

According to Russian sources, the S-400 is capable of detecting and simultaneously engaging six targets out to a range of 400 km (250 miles), including aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles up to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty limits of a range of 3,500 km and a speed of 4.8 km/s.

The missile is may have improved capabilities to counter stealth aircraft. The S-400 is expected to be superseded by the future S-500 missile, with development expected to be completed by 2012. Unconfirmed sources from the Russian Army claim the S-400 is capable to outclass the American MIM-104 Patriot Missile in terms of altitude reached, speed, and accuracy.

Saudi Arabia set to buy 30 Russian military helicopters

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is concluding talks with Saudi Arabia on selling 30 Mi-171B helicopters, a source close to the negotiations said on Tuesday.

"We are in a final stage of talks on the purchase of 30 helicopters and hope to sign the deal in September," the source told RIA Novosti.

The Mi-171 is an export version of the Mi-8 Hip multipurpose helicopter. Currently in production at two factories in the Russian Volga city of Kazan and the East Siberian city of Ulan-Ude, it features more powerful turbo-shaft engines and can carry up to 37 passengers.

The Arab state has traditionally bought only Western, mainly U.S.-made, civilian and military equipment, but has recently expressed an interest in acquiring Russian weaponry, including S-400 air defense systems, T-90 tanks, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, and various types of helicopters.

Russian analysts linked the Saudi interest in Russian weapons with a change in the kingdom's political priorities and the difficulties it has encountered in purchasing weaponry from the West since the September 11 terrorist attacks, masterminded and performed mostly by Saudi citizens.

Russia's Kommersant newspaper reported in July that Russia and Saudi Arabia discussed a number of deals worth an estimated $4 billion a year and a half ago, when the country's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal visited Moscow.

Saudi Arabia's defense budget currently exceeds $33 billion, and is expected to reach $44 billion in 2010.
