Russian 2S31 Vena automated self-propelled gun

The 2S31 Russian Vena automated self-propelled gun is unmatched in the world, claims Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport. An armored floating vehicle with a BMP-3 tracked chassis can engage the enemy with a squall of high-precision mortar fire.

The Vena fires both Russian and NATO standard shells and is fitted with an onboard computer making it possible to carry out super-precision fire in any weather and at time of the day or night over long distances.

The unit is intended to support infantry and armor. It engages the opponent’s armored vehicles, artillery positions and infantry. The mount is armed with a 120mm gun unit. The ammunition load includes standard-type shells, mortar bombs and even Kitolov-2 guided ammunition, directed by a laser beam.

Its distinctive features are high maneuverability and strong armor which protects the crew against small arms fire and shell and mortar fragments. The Vena can negotiate steep slopes, ditches up to 2.5 m wide and water streams at a speed of up to 10 km/hr.

The 2S31 is a 120 mm 2A60 Nona mortar/cannon. It was developed by Joint Stock Venture "Plants of Motovilikha" (Russian: ОАО "Мотовилихинские заводы"). The weapon system is equipped with digital automated fire control system, navigation system, and optical/electronic reconnaissance and target acquisition system.

Mortar mines (up to 7.2 km range) and cannon shells (up to 13 km range) can be used, including guided, HEAT, smoke, and thermobaric munitions. It weighs 19.5 tons.

The 2S31 Vena (Vein) self-propelled mortar system was developed in 1997. This vehicle is designed to support mechanized infantry formations. The 2S31 Vena has been offered for the export customers, however it has received no orders to date.
Since it can fire Russian and captured mortar and cannon shells, it should be a versatile system on the modern battlefield.

Saudi Arabia set to buy 30 Russian military helicopters

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is concluding talks with Saudi Arabia on selling 30 Mi-171B helicopters, a source close to the negotiations said on Tuesday.

"We are in a final stage of talks on the purchase of 30 helicopters and hope to sign the deal in September," the source told RIA Novosti.

The Mi-171 is an export version of the Mi-8 Hip multipurpose helicopter. Currently in production at two factories in the Russian Volga city of Kazan and the East Siberian city of Ulan-Ude, it features more powerful turbo-shaft engines and can carry up to 37 passengers.

The Arab state has traditionally bought only Western, mainly U.S.-made, civilian and military equipment, but has recently expressed an interest in acquiring Russian weaponry, including S-400 air defense systems, T-90 tanks, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, and various types of helicopters.

Russian analysts linked the Saudi interest in Russian weapons with a change in the kingdom's political priorities and the difficulties it has encountered in purchasing weaponry from the West since the September 11 terrorist attacks, masterminded and performed mostly by Saudi citizens.

Russia's Kommersant newspaper reported in July that Russia and Saudi Arabia discussed a number of deals worth an estimated $4 billion a year and a half ago, when the country's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal visited Moscow.

Saudi Arabia's defense budget currently exceeds $33 billion, and is expected to reach $44 billion in 2010.
