Ron Paul is in a statistical tie with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the Iowa caucuses that are scheduled in the first week of January. The issue that sets Paul apart from the other candidates is his foreign policy views.
Paul beleives there is no constitutional basis for the US's aggressive foreign policy. That puts him at odds with most of the other GOP candidates with the possible exception of Jon Huntsman.
As the Wall Street Joural notes, many lowa Republicans are of this Christian mind-set that we need to defend Israel.
For many Republicans, Defending Israel means the US should invade Iran who is Israel's threat of the year. Neo-conservatives led the GOP into Iraq by the nose. It was a $ trillion dollar mistake.
Moreover, the US would be denounced internationally and it is very likely both the Russians and Chinese would intervene to help Iran. Logistics would be easier for the Russians and and Chinese than the US who would have to establish bases in Iraq , Turkey or elsewhere in the Middle East.
Iran topographical map
Iran also has rugged terrain. The Zagrev mountains would make a US infantry assault difficult. Heavy US loses would be likely.
The US has already provided Israel with 55 GBU-28 bunker buster bombs. If Israel is foolish enough to attack Iran, let them shed their own blood and treasure on the venture.
Ron Paul has the right idea. Unfortunately there are many politicians including Democrats who think the US should "defend" Israel. Hillary Clinton is one of them.
