Here we go again, more GOP historical revisionism. Newt does a wonderful impression of a corproate lapdog suggesting Chris Dodd and Barney Frank should be jailed for their limited political roles in the financial meltdown.
Time Magazine and other organizations have developed list of those responsible for the meltdown:
- Angelo Mozilo
- Phil Gramm
- Alan Greenspan
- Chris Cox
- American Consumers
- Hank Paulson
- Joe Cassano
- Ian McCarthy
- Frank Raines
- Kathleen Corbet
- Dick Fuld
- Marion and Herb Sandler
- Bill Clinton
- George W. Bush
- Stan O'Neal
- Wen Jiabao
- David Lereah
- John Devaney
- Bernie Madoff
- Lew Ranieri
- Burton Jablin
- Fred Goodwin
- Sandy Weill
- David Oddsson
- Jimmy Cayne
As you can see neither Dodd or Frank are on the Time list. Bill Clinton is a notable Democratic exception and that is because he repealed some depression era banking legislation drafted by Phil Gramm. Also check, out parts 1,2 and 3 of the al Jazeera series on the meltdown that Rightardia is featuring.
According to a July 2011 Quinnipiac poll, 54 percent of those surveyed say Bush is responsible for the "current condition" of the economy, compared to just 27 percent who blame Obama.
Rightardia will go even farther and suggest the meltdown was caused by corporate misconduct, most of which was on Wall Street. Republican led deregulation was the other big culprit.
The Republicans would be smart to bite their lips on the meltdown. They will gain little by trying to deflect the blame.
