TV Review: Secret Diary of a Call Girl

This is an excellent UK production that some of the Rightardia staff have been watching since last year. The star is Billie Piper, who used to be David Tenant's companion in Dr. Who.

Piper is an excellent actress who does a convincing portrayal as a prostitute. This show has been compared to "Sex in the City but that show was more about the city than sex. "The Secret Diary of a Call girl" has far more tasteful sex and is PG-MA. Piper doesn't not seem to be shy about taking it off.

Courtesy of Wikipedia, the series, set in London and revolves around the life of Hannah Baxter, a seemingly normal woman, who lives a secret life as a call girl, under the pseudonym Belle. Many of the encounters with her clients are humorous, although some are bittersweet.

The series focuses on her professional and private life and its complications as they collide. However, she receives help and advice from her best friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg) in most situations. A  fellow call girl Bambi (Ashley Madekwe) was introduced in the second series premiere. Hannah and she are close friends.

Hannah also narrates the series using the subjective camera technique which is much like a Shakespearean soliloquy.

Hannah wonders if she will ever be able to have a normal relationship with a man because of her profession. Stephanie , Cherie Lunghi, is Belle's madame and she was once a call girl like Belle. She tells Belle that such a relationship is impossible and that a woman once had broken her heart.

Sometimes when Belie goes out on a date with a boy friend, things get complicated because of her profession. Last season she wrote a book about her life that was the rage of London. she started dating the publisher of the book while she was writing new chapters for her second book.

Her relationship was going well until she paid for the services of a Viagra enhanced male prostitute whom she gave a rave review after he showed her what he could do.

When she submitted the chapter on the encounter to her publisher, her relationship with the publisher quickly ended.

In the beginning of the forth season , her boss, Belle's madame, has been arrested for money laundering and she picked Belle to run her business while she is away.

Hannah also to attend to another small matter, the madam'es daughter who thinks her mother is a "corporate head hunter." This a double entendre, of course.

This is a exceptionally well written and produced series. The actresses are quite attractive and the sets and wardrobes are impressive.

Belle is now in her own upscale flat and has what every girl in London wants:  a door that opens to the street. She is trying to have a normal relationship with Ben, her friend from her university days.
