Girfter Rick's weekly radio address: Friday, March 25, 2011

Weekly Radio Address – Friday, March 25, 2011
This is Governor Rick Scott.

This week we learned Florida’s unemployment rate in February moved in the right direction. However, 11.5 percent is still unacceptable. This is more evidence we must make Florida No. 1 for private-sector job creation.

An important part of making Florida competitive is creating a world-class education system. Florida competes with every other state and country, and our students are competing too.

This week, I signed the Student Success Act. It will give Florida the best educated workforce, so our students and our state can compete in the 21st century economy.

I am proud that the first bill I signed is this important legislation. We must recruit and retain the best teachers to make sure every student and every classroom in Florida has a highly effective teacher.

I thank the Florida Legislature for their work on this important issue. I now call on the legislature to increase school choice by expanding charter schools. Doing so will move our education system another step forward.

We must give parents more choice to select the schools best for their children.
You can help. Join me by letting your voice be heard.

According to Bloomberg, Florida's unemployment rate dropped by 0.4 of a percentage point to 11.5 percent. This is the second consecutive month it's declined.

That's the lowest it's been since last July, when Florida also was at 11.5 percent.  Nearly 1.1 million Floridians remain out of work.

Flagler County had the highest unemployment rate at 14.9 percent, followed by Hernando County at 13.9 percent and Hendry County at 13.4 percent.

Charter schools are not a solution for Florida's education ills.  TH GOp has been twiddling for 10 years in state education and only 20 per cent of charter schools doany better than the standard public schools.

Although 62 Florida charter schools have been closed, the majority have been shut down due to financial and enrolment issues; most of the academic unperformers have been allowed to remain open.

Based on absolute achievement scores, fewer charter schools excel and more are failing than Florida's district schools.
