Rightardia comment: Marshall McLuhan, a professor from Canada, wrote a book: Forward Through the Rearview Mirror: Reflections. McLuhan thought a lot of Americans looked at themselves through the rear view mirror. This can explain the white ethnic country music culture, Tea Baggers, Birthers and Astro Turfers who are out of touch with the modern world.
Terribly busy day yesterday. I ended up missing much of what transpired in the news after 1 PM so I might do a bit of catching up today and comment on day old stories, like Pat Buchanan’s racist rant in what is probably the most ridiculous right-wing website out there - WorldNutDaily. Buchanan’s article title, “Traditional Americans are losing their nation“, is a dead giveaway that cable’s number one defender of white guy’s rights, still isn’t getting it.
In their lifetimes, they have seen their Christian faith purged from schools their taxes paid for, and mocked in movies and on TV. They have seen their factories shuttered in the thousands and their jobs outsourced in the millions to Mexico and China. They have seen trillions of tax dollars go for Great Society programs, but have seen no Great Society, only rising crime, illegitimacy, drug use and dropout rates.
They watch on cable TV as illegal aliens walk into their country, are rewarded with free educations and health care and take jobs at lower pay than American families can live on – then carry Mexican flags in American cities and demand U.S. citizenship.
They see Wall Street banks bailed out as they sweat their next paycheck, then read that bank profits are soaring, and the big bonuses for the brilliant bankers are back. Neither they nor their kids ever benefited from affirmative action, unlike Barack and Michelle Obama.
They see a government in Washington that cannot balance its books, win our wars or protect our borders. The government shovels out trillions to Fortune 500 corporations and banks to rescue the country from a crisis created by the government and Fortune 500 corporations and banks.
Hmmm. Lot’s of crap there to sift through. Buchanan’s rant comes in defense of “truthers,” “birthers,” tea party activists” and “town-hall dissenters” and “Oath Keepers.”
Buchanan tells us they’re angry people, all of them, and in his view, they’re quite justified. After all, “neither they nor their kids ever benefited from affirmative action, unlike Barack and Michelle Obama.” That’s about as ignorant as it gets.
From the racist’s perspective, Obama’s success cannot in some way be attributed to his intelligence, focus and hard work. Nope, it’s all about Obama being black and getting an unfair advantage over…yep, the white guy.
It’s typical “we” (aka ‘white people’, mostly male no doubt) versus “they” (African Americans, Hispanics, non-Christians and anyone else who does not fit into Buchanan’s lily-white Christian world.
And the result of all this, Buchanan tells us, is that…
America was once their country. They sense they are losing it. And they are right.
No, it’s not that they’re losing their country. It’s that they are locked into a 1950s mindset which stunts their understanding of how societies function. Great nations and people evolve within a framework of just laws and just societies.
When one is unable to view their world from beyond the narrow confines of “me”, then what you get is a pundit who writes an article titled “Traditional Americans are losing their nation” where traditional carries a single meaning: everyone who is exactly like me.
