Christianity's Effect on Western Civilization

When the European Union was being formed, the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) wanted Christianity to be mentioned in the charter for its contributions.

''This decision not to mention our religious heritage denies an aspect of Europe's history," said Keith Jenkins, director of the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), which brings together most of Europe's Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox churches.

An acknowledgement of Europe's "religious heritage" had earlier been left out of the charter's preamble at the insistence of the French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, whose country has a long tradition of the separation of church and state.

Christianity's contribution to Europe is  checkered. The Spanish Inqusiton didn't end until 1830 and Catholic Church had been involved in religious wars with Protestants for hundreds of years. Science was also repressed.

What brought Europe out of the Dark Ages? it was the flourishing of liberal thought in the Renaissance and the Reformation.

But wait, there's more! The truth is Christianity made some negative contributions to Europe and retarded Europe for 1000 years. Unfortunately Islam seems to be having the the same effect on the Middle East.
