Republicans like to use the word 'appeasment' a lot

Republicans like to talk about appeasement and the word was used a lot during the 2008 election. In fact, the GOP suggested if Obama were elected president, the US would follow a foreign policy of appeasement.

Prior to World War 2, Adolf Hitler wanted to consoldiate all German speaking area of Europe into Germany as part of his lebensraum (living space) policy. British PM Neville chamberlain agreed to let Hitler annex the German speaking Sudentanland form Czechoslovakia with the hopes the German aggression would cease.

Chamberlain was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940. Chamberlain is best known for his appeasement foreign policy, after signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938, which ceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany.

When Adolf Hitler continued his aggression and invaded Poland, Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, and Chamberlain led Britain through the first eight months of World War 2.

What many Americans don't know is that the GOP didn't want the US to enter the war and had an isolationist 'America First' policy.  The US was forced into the war when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and Hitler declared war on the US four days later. There was also an American Nazi movement at the time called the Bund which has many similarities to the Tea Party movement.

Many American believe that Chamberlain was some sort of weak kneed liberal who appeased Hitler. In fact, Chamberlain was a conservative.

Did a liberal or labor leader in the UK appease Hitler. No, a conservative made this historical blunder.

RT: Oliver Stone to produce the “Secret History of America”

The director of controversial political biopics “JFK”, “Nixon” and “W”, American Oscar-winner Oliver Stone has revealed his attitude towards Stalin and Hitler. Stone told reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour that such figures as Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and McCarthy “have been vilified pretty thoroughly by history.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Stone was quoted as saying “Stalin has a complete other story.”

“Not to paint him as a hero, but to tell a more factual representation. He fought the German war machine more than any single person. We can't judge people as only ‘bad’ or ‘good’. Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and it’s been used cheaply. He's the product of a series of actions. It's cause and effect…”

The director, who is currently working on the highly-anticipated documentary series “Secret History of America”, also complained that “people in America don't know the connection between WWI and WWII.” The Secret History of America, is a 10-part documentary mini-series that will air on Showtime.

“I've been able to walk in Stalin's shoes and Hitler's shoes to understand their point of view. We are going to educate our minds and liberalize them and broaden them. We want to move beyond opinions; go into the funding of the Nazi party; how many American corporations were involved, from GM through to IBM. Hitler is just a man who could have easily been assassinated.”

The premiere of his “Secret History of America”, which centers on some of the lesser–known moments in American history, is scheduled for mid 2010.

Rightardia comment: Republicans' blood will boil when this film is released. During World War 2 the GOP had an isolationist "America Firster' view and wanted to stay out of the war. Many US corporations worked openly with the Nazis including George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush.

In addition, Stone will probably point out that Stalin brought the Russian people kicking and screaming into the modern world. Wikipedia estimates the death toll in World War II was 62 to 78 million. Twenty eight million of the war dead were Russians.

Indeed, Hitler could have been assassinated, but he made so many bad military decisions, the Allies were against liquidating him.
