Wisconsin recall only days away

Rightardia hopes the Wisconsin recall is successful.

In a related story, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s co-star in a recent video where he talked about using his budget repair bill to “divide and conquer” the state paid zero in taxes in 2010. 

Diane Hendricks, a billionaire and the richest woman in the state, saw her tax drop from $2.2 million in 2009 to zero in 2010. Hendricks, Walker’s largest campaign donor, managed the feat by changing ABC Supply’s tax structure. 

Last year, Hendricks was revealed to be one of the anonymous million dollar donors to the Koch Brothers political efforts. 

The revelation was made by Charles Koch himself during a speech at a private event secretly recorded and delivered to Mother Jones magazine. 

In a video released last month Hendricks is seen asking Walker how he would begin the process of turning Wisconsin into a right-to-work state.
Wisconsin is fortunate to have the recall option. Florida does not.

WIN: New documents show extraordinary influence of ALEC

The Madison, Wisconsin based Center For Media And Democracy Thursday released a report called “ALEC Exposed In Wisconsin: The Hijacking of A State”.

The Center For Media and Democracy Executive Director Lisa Graves says it documents the extraordinary corporate influence of ALEC’s legislative agenda that goes far beyond mere lobbying that gives unelected corporate lobbyists equal votes with lawmakers on Wisconsin laws.

Lisa Graves noted:

 Our key findings are that 32 bills or budget provisions that have been introduced in this last year and a half reflect ALEC model legislation. Twenty-on of these bills were passed, nineteen of them became law. Over a quarter million dollars has been given to ALEC legislative members in the state by ALEC corporations in campaign donations since 2008. And nearly a half million dollars - $400,000 – has been given to Scott Walker to his state account since 2008.

The Center For Media Democracy and Common Cause are calling on attornies general in Wisconsin and other states to investigate ALEC’s legislative role and its claim that it isn’t a lobbying organization.

Graves says ALEC’s heavy handed control over many state politicians – including key legislators in Wisconsin- amounts to a corporate hijacking of state government.

Graves explained:

When you look at that information in totality we think its fair to say that ALEC has helped hijack Wisconsin. And we think it’s fair to say that the people of Wisconsin have not been informed by their elected officials about the role of ALEC.

Walker Billionaire Video Further Energizes Wisconsin Uprising

With music, food and speeches Wisconsin’s South Central Federation of Labor’s Solidarity Kick-Off launched a door-to-door get out the vote push to recall Governor Scott Walker June 5th.

It was a spirited affirmation of the Wisconsin Uprising’s determination to defeat Walker’s attacks on workers, on education, health care and on women. 

It came two days after a January 2011 video of Walker talking to Wisconsin billionaire Diane Hendricks surfaced. Hendricks asked Walker if he could make Wisconsin a ‘right to work” state by attacking unions. 

Walker’s reply was an enthusiastic ‘Oh yeah!”. Walker said the “first step” was to attack public worker collective bargaining to “divide and conquer”. Hendricks went on to give Walker more than $500,000. 

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said: 

This is a moment in tine where people in Wisconsin get to decide whether they want to take back their state or do they want someone who wants to divide and conquer.

Wisconsin State Representative Chris Taylor vowed that on June 5th Walker will hear the roar of Wisconsin mothers intent on protecting education and workers.

Rep. Chris Taylor said: 

We will never stand for what he took from workers and working families – 60 years of collective bargaining rights – we’re gonna get those back. Now he’s been caught on videotape, so arrogant – doesn’t think he’s actually being taped – that we’re going to listen to what he said about his strategy, divide and conquer. Scott Walker, I’ll give you this. You’re good at dividing. But we will never be conquered by you. The people united will never be defeated! (crowd chants along) The people united will never be defeated!”

Wisconsin Education Association President Mary Bell added: 

Every single action that’s come up has been a confirmation of what we knew his first actions were about. And they aren’t about helping the working people of this state. They aren’t about supporting families. And they aren’t about education. They are about pushing a corporate agenda, just like Ms. Hendricks wanted to bring to him and he so gleefully embraced.

Madison, Wisconsin police officer Brian Austin has protested Walker’s attack on workers from the beginning as an activist with Cops For Labor. He says the Walker billionaire video show that the governor is corrupt.

Brian Austin explained: 

My first reaction is a very visceral one, because it was just such an utterly creepy and sinister conversation. It’s supremely offensive to me as a police officer to hear that and to witness that lack of integrity.

Duffy’s former campaign manager accepted a position with Koch’s Americans for Prosperity. In March 2011, the LA Times reported that Duffy’s former campaign manager, Matt Seaholm, accepted a position with Americans for Prosperity, “one of Walker's most vocal allies in his skirmish with the unions.” [LA Times, 3/10/11]

Local news spoke out against Duffy’s failed leadership. During the protests in Wisconsin over Governor Scott Walker’s attempts to strip collective bargaining rights, the Wausau Daily Herald wrote that Duffy’s failure to comment on the situation was “weak” and “just plain lame.” [Wausau Daily Herald, 2/19/11]

Well over 100,000 people demonstrated and marched for worker rights in Madison Wisconsin over the weekend during a daylong rally that included a Farm Labor Tractorcade. Fifty tractors joined firefighters, off-duty police, teachers and other people of all ages from every walk of life in solidarity against the gutting of collective bargaining rights for Wisconsin public workers.

[Cheers]: 

Wisconsin’s “Fab 14” state Democratic senators, who had been blocking a vote destroying public worker collective bargaining, returned to a hero’s welcome in Madison. Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller.

[Miller]: “We have returned to Wisconsin to thank the people who have with their voices, and their marches and their rallies here in Madison and around the state to protest the stripping away of the rights of employees in the state of Wisconsin. They have inspired us. They have created a new dynamic, a new political dynamic in the state of Wisconsin that says respect workers, respect citizens. We are here to join them in that fight.”

Senator Fred Risser is in his eighties and has been serving in the state senate since the 1950’s.

[Risser]: “The war is not over. The fight for workers’ rights is continuing. It’s a real privilege to participate in this. And I want to thank everyone who’s helped us on this. The people, the crowds around the capitol, we watched those on TV and they were stimulating to us and kept us going. It’s a remarkable experience and it’s not over yet.”

A robust effort to recall eight Republican state senators who voted to gut collective bargaining is underway. Money and signatures for the recalls – including one aimed at Governor Walker -were being collected at the rally.

Wisconsin’s Democrat Secretary of State, Doug LaFollette, is delaying the collective bargaining law’s implementation by refusing to officially publish it later this month. The law doesn’t go into effect until March 26th - a day after he officially publishes it. That allows more time for legal challenges to the new law.

A quote has been floating around the internet lately, tickling Progressive fancies, attributed to Adolph Hitler. It goes as follows:

We must close union offices, confiscate their money and put their leaders in prison. We must reduce workers salaries and take away their right to strike.
 
Although we on the Left got a hearty laugh at the obvious comparison between Mr. Holocaust of 1945 and just about every Republican governor in America, I'm sad to report that Mr. Hitler did not ever utter those choice words.

In fact, he publicly praised trade unions... just before shutting them down, confiscating their funds and putting their leaders in concentration camps.

It should be noted that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker never even mentioned abolishing public sector unions in his campaigns speeches . . .

So I guess he and Adolph have a lot more in common than we think,

As Democratic State Representative Peter Barca protested that it violates the state’s open meetings act, Republicans controlling the Senate-Assembly conference committee ignored him and rushed to a vote as protesters chanted “shame”.

They are separating the collective bargaining portion from the budget bill which they say will make it legal for Republican senators alone to vote to end collective bargaining rights.

As Democratic State Representative Peter Barca protested that it violates the state’s open meetings act, Republicans controlling the Senate-Assembly conference committee ignored him and rushed to a vote as protesters chanted “shame”. 

Republicans believe that their action Wednesday evening clears the way for both houses of the Wisconsin legislature to approve the gutting of collective bargaining for public workers without any  Democratic state senators being present.

The collective bargajning portion of the budget bill is scheduled to be taken up by the Republican controlled state assembly Thursday morning.

Wisconsin Senate Republicans voted 18-1 to send the bill to the conference committee. Sen. Dale Schultz was the lone Republican 'no" vote. Democrats in the Assembly lack enough members to block the vote in that house.

Rightardia suspects many court cases to follow. A recall effort is under-way against eight Republican senators and Scott Walker's turn will come in a year.

Democratic Underground: WI Republicans think their recall is unfair

Wisconsin state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R) expressed his frustration with the state's recall laws  during a press conference on Tuesday.

Fitzgerald's off-the-cuff comments sounded less like he was mulling any actual prospective efforts to change the law. 

Fitzgerald is irritated that a significant number of his caucus members -- those last elected in 2008 -- are being targeted for recalls by Democrats.

The Republicans brought this on themselves. The  battle over Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal and its union busting employee union provisions was self-inflicted and could have been easily avoided.

The public unions have been willing to negotiate with Walker. They have not been willing to give up their collective bargaining rights in  a state where the American union movement started. 

Had the GOP senate candidates  intentions been clear in the elections, many would not be in the state house today.

Walker said:

Yeah, I mean, I've always been a believer that recall probably would be more appropriate if a legislator was involved in some type of, you know, either criminal activity, or something that could be deemed, you know, unethical," said Fitzgerald. "Not related to simply taking a stance on a tough vote. And you know, I think there's other legislators that feel that way as well.
 
Rightardia doesn't recall similar GOP sentiments when Grey Davis was recalled as the Governor of California.

Most of Davis' problems started when the GOP changes federal law that allowed Enron to expand into areas in the oil industry of which it had been prohibited.

Enron raised oil prices in California which created an economic crises that led to the recall of Davis.

Davis had not committed public malfeasance or violated any laws.

Wisconsin Protesters disrupt GOP Congressman's Town Hall Meeting In Governor's Hometown

State reps Jim Sensenbrenner and Leah Vukmir, of the 5th Senate District, walked out on their unhappy constituents after about 30 minutes of threatening to do so because attendees wanted to discuss the political unrest in Wisconsin.

It's good to see American labor on its feet. The GOP brought this upon itself with its staged Tea Party movement and its desire to destroy public unions.

Workers Independent News: Recall Effort Against Wisconsin GOP Senators Off To A Strong, Passionate Start

Kristopher Rowe: “Knowing how much passion and fire is not just under me, but every single one of these volunteers, I know we’re going to succeed.”

Krsitopher Rowe, who is coordinating the recall effort against Wisconsin Republican state senator Alberta Darling near Milwaukee.

Eight Republican senators who are supporting the attack on collective bargaining rights for public workers are recall targets. Conservatives have also targeted eight Wisconsin state senate Democrats.

But the energy, momentum and people power is much higher against the Republicans. Rowe says in one state senate district alone hundreds have volunteered and thousands of signatures were collected in a single weekend.

Rowe: “We had about six hundred volunteers hit the ground, knocking on doors collecting signatures. And although I don’t know an exact number, I know we collected several thousand. We need 21,000.”

The recall signatures must be collected within 60 days. After they are certified, recall elections will be scheduled for the sixth Tuesday after the signatures are validated. Rowe says more information is available about the recall at recalltherepublican8.com

Wisconsin uprising: Let's meet at the border

Senator Mark Miller: "In a democracy, we negotiate." 

Wisconsin state senator Mark Miller, The Democratic state leader in Wisconsin, has written a letter to Gov. Scott Walker asking him to hold a meeting to resolve differences regarding his controversial proposed budget. he wants to mett with Walker at a neutral site along the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

I write today to offer to meet, in person, as soon as possible to resume discussions on how we reach a bipartisan solution to our differences on January 2011 Special Session Senate and Assembly Bill 11. 

The working people of Wisconsin are deeply concerned about what the future holds for their families and for the great state they call home. Now more than ever they are counting on us as leaders to work together to resolve our difference to move our state forward.

Since the bill's introduction public workers have come forward to offer economic concessions and democrats have offered a number of proposals to try to reach a bipartisan resolution.

I assure you that Democratic State Senators despite our differences and the vigorous debate we have had, remain ready and willing to find a reasonable compromise. To that end, I would ask that you or your authorized representatives agree to seem with us near the Wisconsin-Illinois border to formally resume serious discussions as soon as possible.

Rasmussen Poll bad news for Gov. Scott Walker

Newsmax sent me an email saying Rasmussen poll found that 60 percent of Wisconsin voters “disapprove” of Gov. Walker and 48 percent “strongly disapprove” of Gov. Walker.

Why is this according to NewsMax? Why, it's the unrelenting attacks from the liberal media!

A more accurate answer would be that the GOP thought they could play the class warfare card against government workers and lost the battle.

The GOP would be smart to take their losses and withdraw. The Madison uprising could energise a union movement across the nation. An increase in union strength is essential to a strong middle class.
