A report shows average life expectancy in the U.S. lagging behind other countries, There is troubling news for women.The problem is far worse in the Red States.
Social scientists have blamed some of these problems on changes in women's' life styles and a US health care system that lags behind the other industrial counties of the world. US life expectancy is 37th in the world.
A new study expects Americans to live almost eight years longer than the previous government estimates, putting a strain on Medicare and Social Security programs.
Rightardia comment: Moving the Social security and Medicare age up to 70 will not help matters because the average American would not be able to maintain employment that long.
Reforming Medicare and national health care will be more important than ever because the government expects $ billions of dollars in cost savings.
In addition, the Social Security tax needs to be reformed. It is the most regressive federal payroll tax of all because of the $106,800 cap. The burden of this tax has primarily been on the middle class and the poor since Social Security was passed into law in 1935. Social Security could easuily be fixed by taxing 100 per cent of Income like Medicare or by moving more of the burden of this tax to more affluent Americans.
During the Obama campaign, a $250,000 do-nut was discussed that would exempt Americans earning less than $250,000 from paying the Social Security tax. Conservatives would howl if the Social Security tax were ever made into a more progressive tax.
